Painting this model was a test in patience. The assembly of the kit was no problem, but I used paints that were new to me; Vallejo to be specific. Now these paints are great... when they work properly. If you can find that sweet spot for airbrushing, the finished model will look great.

I started with the nose cone, using Carmine Red. I mixed the paint with water to get a milky consistency. Using an Aztec A270 airbrush the coverage was smooth and even.

I then took a stab at the blue section using Deep Sky Blue. It also sprayed smoothly and evenly and it looked great.

I moved on to the main body and wings using Silver. This too came out looking great... but I ran out of paint and had to mix a new batch. This is where it all fell apart. The coverage was runny, uneven. I tried more air pressure; less air pressure… added more paint then added more water. It looked horrible.
It also looked so wrong. It looked like a toy all bright and shiny. I went back to the screen grabs and realized that Natural Steel was almost perfect.

I had to lightly sand it down, recover it with Vallejo Gray Primer and then tried the Natural Steel again. I found that sweet spot and it looked great. But wait… after waiting a day I closed the wings.
When the wings were inside the main body, paint was scraped off of the wings. I was livid. I lightly sanded down the wings and tried to paint just the area ruined. The paint came out running, uneven and ruined the finished. I took a step a back and calmed down. I waited a few days and came back to try and conquer my fears of airbrushing. I lightly sanded down the entire main body and primed it again. I mixed a larger batch of Natural Steel paint to ensure I wouldn’t run out mid-way again. This time the paint came out just right.

Now on to the engines and stabilizer wings; I primed and painted the engines and wings. This time the paint came out okay, not great but okay. I didn’t want to use the decals that came with the kit. I carefully masked out the lines, applied Deep Sky Blue, waited a little while and pulled off the tape. There is run through on two of the engines, but the color looked good. I waited a day and then masked off just the blue lines and then repainted the engines Natural Steel. Everything looked fine after a little touch up.

I waited a few days, assembled the sections and sprayed it with a gloss overcoat. I waited another day and started to apply the decals using Microset and Microsol. These decals are kind of thick and really didn’t want to settle down into the recessed lines. I used multiple applications and still they didn’t settle down. After waiting another day I sprayed dull coat to seal the decals.

I’ve waited for years to buy this kit and now that it’s pretty much finished, I’m very pleased with it.

Now on to panel lines and weathering…

Back in 1999 when AMT re-issued the Space:1999 Eagle kit I bought several of them. I built one, making it as accurate as possible. I used the passenger pod from one to convert into a "lab pod" and two of the engine bells from the same kit to make a spine booster for the first one. The leftover pieces sat in the box for a few years until I got to thinking about what the Alphans would do with the numerous wrecked Eagles that seemed to crash in every episode and this is what I came up with, I call it the Vulture.

I built this using 2 of the 1:200 scale AMT Manned Spaceflight Rocket sets. I used the Saturn 1b and Saturn V rocket stages like on the original filming model. I used the Atlas rocket bodies along with engine bells from the Saturn V second stage to make the weapon pods, the Apollo command modules and LM shrouds to make the strap on booster engine bells and part of the LM shroud and the transition piece from the SV second stage to make the large engine bell.
The nosecone section is scratchbuilt using Evergreen Sheet Plastic, all of the various detail bits were made from pieces of Evergreen sheet, rod and tubing.
The model is 21.5 inches long.
I chose to go with this being a Hawk attached to Moonbase Alpha so some of the markings used were not on the original filming model.
There is a comprehensive build thread in the Sci-fi section of the Hobbytalk forum.

The last picture below is from before I started painting it, I included it to show the underside detail.
