Eclipse Month Is Here!!

First off - from the anything-you-can-do-I-can-do (sort-of) file, here's some great photos/video from Monday's partial lunar eclipse over Asia and Europe. Anybody out there see it?

Meanwhile - for us Statesiders, the countdown is on: two weeks to go, til the Great American Eclipse arrives!

:#:

Lucky you, who are anywhere near the totality path (Oregon to South Carolina)...wish the rest of us were!

Still, we should all see at least some of the Sun disappear, behind the new Moon; I'm hearing we'll see about a one-half-eclipsed Sun, here in SoCal. And well-nigh everybody over here will be covering it live, including online!

Fingers crossed, for good viewing weather (with proper eye protection!)...

Today's The Day!!

:2c: :#:

We are on stand-by, here in my part of SoCal! Early-am clouds are clearing out, so we're gonna see it! (Will be watching online, too) Awaiting that first "missing bite" out of the Sun, as I send this...

While we're waiting...here's Google Doodle's cute take on our big day:

Believe we've got some ETF members up there in Oregon - indeed, if you're anywhere along the totality path (lucky!), be sure to let us know what you see!

(And, watch safely! ;))

"Missing bite" (a tiny nip, really) just observed - here it comes!

About 10 minutes to go. Light outside has noticeably lessened (sky completely clear), can see multiple flickering crescent-shapes on walls and courtyard floor below my balcony.

BIG bite missing from Sun now; looks like the Cheshire Cat's smile when the rest of him has disappeared. (Even saw what looked like a few sunspots earlier!)

Best coverage on NASA-TV; other stations are simulcasting it....

And, here we go!!!

Here are some of the photos I took with my Nikon Coolpix P 500, the first three photos were done using a filter, the last three with no filter:

I couldn't agree more - fantastic!

Breathtaking!!

 :pics:

Gorgeous, and all the other superlatives!! Lucky, lucky, lucky...

I still remember the 1992 total annular solar eclipse (ring, not corona - drat!) we got to see here - sun and moon, sinking into the Pacific together...

You don't ever really forget, once you've seen one of these...
