Mystery Colonel White

A couple of years ago I bought a scuffed Colonel White figure from a collectors' shop in Akihabara, Japan and I know nothing about it. I intend to paint it properly once fully stripped down.

I'll post a pic later, but he's moulded in vinyl and is about 1/8 scale. He had (since stripped off) a Carlton copyright label on his back, so he's not that old.

His head is moulded in a rather orange flesh colour, his legs and arms in dark grey and his tunic in white. He was quite cheap, but I have only ever seen one other one, and that was on eBay.

Does anyone know if there were other figures like this? Or even who made him?
I know that without the photo it's pretty hard to work it out, but I can't upload from my PhotoBucket account at work. I will upload photos when I get home.

The arms rotated around the shoulder joint, the waist also rotated as did the neck.

There were scarlet, blue and white, will try and post a pic later

Hey Dazzo... thanks for the information! I really do know nothing about these particular figures. I wish they had been more widely available.

Here is mine in it's semi-stripped state. I've cut off the excess to allow me to assemble him once he's been repainted.

The head is actually a pretty good likeness to the puppet... I'm looking forward to any photos of Scarlet and Blue.

Just seen another one on eBay... and it looks like it came with a HAT!

The seller doesn't mention a manufacturer but does say it came out in 2001.

I'm wondering if these were made by Banpresto? It could have been a UFO catcher machine prize, like the Taito Thunderbirds models?

Colonel White and Captain Blue are in each other's boxes...

TV21Dalek 14-03-2012 01:23 PM

They're not brillliant, but they are nice. I think if they were better painted they'd be really nice figures. Thanks for sharing the photos - now I know what to look for in November.

I will strip White right back and then repaint him.

andersonitis 14-03-2012 11:25 PM

For a minute I thought your original photo was the Sevans Col white
Which are mega rare only 80 Col whites produced & they came in a plain box with no label stuck on the outside
I have 2 of the 80 made

TV21Dalek 15-03-2012 07:46 AM

I remember seeing the Captain Scarlet kit before Beatties closed down in Glasgow but they were always out of my reach - very expensive. Didn't know they did a Colonel White.

On those Sevans' kits, are the necks too short? There's something a bit squashed about the head/neck on all the ones I've seen, or the faces are too broad?

Conrad Turner 19-03-2012 12:16 PM

As bought, the necks are long. The instructions tell you to cut out the neck hole in the tunic and push the neck into it, so the ones you have seen may be either ones that the builder cut the neck off and ended up cutting it short, or it may have sunk in too far.

I have both Black and Scarlet Sevans kits, and would have given my left arm for a White.

TV21Dalek 19-03-2012 12:25 PM

Ah right... I thought as they are vinyl kits they would have had a 'flange' moulded into the neck. I've built a fair number of vinyl kits and that's a common feature.

Were the Sevans kits like the Screamin' ones? I mean were they poured into a mould like the Horizon kits, or rotocast?

The Black in your avatar Conrad is a great looking model. Just wish they hadn't been so expensive originally - I bought their vac kits and they were dear, but these were way beyond my budget at the time. (Settled for an Imai Scott vinyl figure instead)

Conrad Turner 20-03-2012 08:41 AM

The Sevans kits were rotocast as I recall. Although there seems to be some sort of air inlet in the underside of my Scarlet neck and in the waist of both sets of legs I have, so they may even have been blow moulded.

As to the Black in my Avatar, he is probably due a re-paint. I have learnt so much this year that my painting will have taken a massive step forward. I was previously having trouble with the Scarlet head. The Black I envisioned as an actor playing the role in a live-action film, and tried to paint him accordingly, but Scarlet was looking like a badly painted puppet.

I am now working on re-painting him having stripped and re-undercoated him and with just a base flesh colour and a shadow wash he looks beter than before. So once I have finished Scarlet, I will mask off Black's hat and re-undercoat the face and re-paint Black to the same standard I can now get on Scarlet.

TV21Dalek 20-03-2012 09:18 AM

I have GOT to get one of these Sevans Scarlet/Black kits!

Conrad Turner 28-03-2012 02:08 PM

Good luck.

They're quite rare now, I don't think he makes them any more, which is a crime really.

Best bet is probably E-bay, but don't get the first one you see, it may well be overpriced.

And despite what andersonitis said, your white was clearly not a Sevans. The belt is wrong for that (Plastic), and the zip pulls are also clearly plastic. It also looks like the hands are part of the arms, which was not the case with the Sevans models.

andersonitis 28-03-2012 02:15 PM

I did say

"For a minute I thought your original photo was the Sevans Col white"

Conrad Turner 28-03-2012 02:21 PM

You also said you owned 2 of them.

I don't own a White, but could easily tell the sculpt was not up to Sevans standards.

:D

They were "loyalty" models-ordered via a mail shot from Sevans if you bought directly from them-I've got one plus Scarlet and Cap Blue plus Lt Green to finish-had Black but the head sculpt never looked right to me-cheeks far too sunken.
