Bond left him the can of motor oil thinking that after about 20 miles of walking in the desert heat he would drink the oil out of maddening thirst.
M does say that they found his body with 2 bullets in his head and motor oil in his stomach. My first conclusion is that he picked up the oil can (WHY?) and walked off with it, drank it out of maddening thirst and was later caught and shot.
My second conclusion is that he picked up the oil (again why?) and walked off with it, was caught with it, forced to drink it and then shot.
He wasn't mad with thirst when Bond gave it to him so why pick it up in the first place?

My interpretation was that he had failed his superiors and that, being everywhere, there was nowhere really to hide. Whether he drank it to try to kill himself or was forced to before being executed, I couldn't decide.

A few gadgets would have helped, a bit more humour too. Also the gun barrel shot at the end was, I've read, supposed to signify that Bond was finally back after all his emotional wringing. The bad guy's demise was off camera - a bit of a let down and the destruction of the building at the end was a bit limp. Frankly it looked about as menacing as a hotel with half a dozen staff in the middle of the desert. Not a satisyfying conclusion, I thought.

Which is exactly of course what it was!
PS, just seen the bonus disc and now feel really cheated. This is the lamest bonus disc (not just of Bond films) of all time! One (count 'em, ONE) programme about the locations and thats followed on the disc by 8 or so other choices- but wait- theose choices are simply chapter points to the previous thing you've just watched. What a f***ing rip off. Do yourself a favour and buy the one disc edition. Let's face it, I've seen more extras on a Dr.No dvd- and that's when the world didnt care about 'behind the scenes'

I'm not much of a bestsellers reader, but I find these novels completely fascinating and very, very realistic. The essence: Secret agents are not superheros, they sometimes fail.
sounds like a descrip of LeCarre's novels.

I really dislike what I've seen of the Bourne films (only got through the first one due to Clive Owen turning up occasionally), and hated CASINO ROYALE, because to me it had nothing to do with Fleming or Bond, since Bond probably was more mature than this when he was 13, not a haggard looking near-40.

Even having said, that, I gotta admit that except for Craig, QOS really worked for me, it almost made up for all the missteps of the last couple decades (my idea of Bond is FRWL, TLD, LTK.)
