Default Dr. StrangeloveOr: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb

Stanley Kubrick's brilliant, satirical, provocative black comedy/fantasy regarding doomsday and Cold War politics that features an accidental, inadvertent, pre-emptive nuclear attack. The funny (and frightening), dark film cleverly cuts back and forth mid-scene (and increases in rapidity as the film draws to an insane close) from three main set locations, each with their own distinctive camera styles:

1.A locked office in a sealed-off Air Force command base of a psychotic, impotent bomb-group commander who is zealously convinced that the Russians have devised water fluoridation to weaken American men
2.The cramped, flight deck interior of the B-52 bomber
3.The Pentagon's huge underground War Room where an inept US President has convened an advisory staff.

Peter Sellers plays three roles in this film:
1.Dr. Strangelove- The advisor to the President who is wheelchair bound.
2.Mr. Merkin Muffley an egg-headed President of the US with a bland American accent
3.Group Captain Lionel Mandrake-a stuffy British Exchange Programme liaison officer.

This film has many sexual references and connotations (including large phallic cigars, mating airplanes, guns, Ripper's impotent "loss of essence", and the orgasmic atomic bomb that Kong rides between his legs). This film earned 4 Academy Awards nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor (Peter Sellers), Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Apparently, Sellers was also supposed to play Kong as well but a broken ankle prevented this

In the movie about him he really did not break his ankle. He faked it.He was having problems getting the Southern dialect. But there is evidence that the dialect problem was only part of the reason why Sellers decided to forego the Major Kong role. Sellers' long-time driver and valet Bert Mortimer claimed that Sellers was terrified at the thought of shooting the climactic drop out of the B-52's bomb bay doors. Kong was eventually recast with an entirely different performer. Starting the search, Kubrick reasoned that a mere actor would not do in the case of Major Kong.Kubrick wanted a real life cowboy in that role. Sellers is still and always will be a genius.

Slim Pickings was wonderful in the part. I love this movie for all sorts of reasons. Sellers was very good, but so was everyone else too.

With such wonderful lines:

"Gentlemen! You can't fight in here - this is the WAR ROOM!'

I wonder how the original ending - with a massive custard pie fight - would have worked out

And James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader) is one of the bomber crew.

Along with Shane (Scott Tracy) Rimmer.

Stirling Hayden was also Spielberg's first choice to play Quint in Jaws but I forget why it didn't happen.

Sterling Hayden is an interesting actor. His admiration for the Communist partisans led to a brief membership in the Communist Party. According to his as the Red Scare deepened in U.S., "he cooperated with the House Un-American Activities Committee, confessing his brief Communist ties" and 'naming names'. His wife at that time, Betty De Noon, insisted that the 'names' her ex-husband provided were already in the hands of the Committee, which had a copy of the Communist Party's membership list. Yet, he played a character that was so anti-communist. Kubrick resurrected his career by playing General Jack Ripper.
