Assuming the Chris Pine version of Captain Kirk is the same age as the actor, that being 28, that would make him 31 when he completed his three years of Starfleet Academy & got his posting to the Enterprise after Captain Pike was injured by Nero. Even if Pine/Kirk was 28 when posted, that would only make him five years younger than Kirk was at the time of his assignment to the Enterprise from the original series (33), since Shatner/Kirk pointed out he was 34 at the time of the second season episode "Deadly Years". To that end, being 28 (or 31) when Kirk assumed command is really not too far off the mark. Unreal? Yes but, so is a 33 year old Captain. It's more believeable than Kirk only being 37 at the time of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
