As Mark's host I'd just like to chip in here...

I've known Mark for quite some time, even before the Transporter forum started, and it would be a travesty to see it close and I've told Mark this.

We're looking at various ways to reduce the bandwidth and banning the googlebot from the forum is just one of the ideas. Mark has done a superb job of building the community here and I personally would love to see the forum continuing to grow.

At the end of the day I would rather see a community develop for what I feel is an excellent niche than have Mark removing what little hair he has left over a slight over usage of bandwidth

I was first scared then relieved reading through this thread...

I am addicted to this site. Even now, as I am presently spending a month on sunny Mauritius in the Indian Ocean I can't resist to check in from time to time.

Thank you Mark for creating this forum! I would also have paid a fee had it come to that.

Pretty conclusive. Good detective work. Definitely a result.

I was absolutely 'gob smacked' when you told us how much bandwidth was being used by the Googlebots, and looking at the evidence you have to say that is one hell of a result.

I can't believe this site is unique in the googlebot situation, so how do they justify usurping so much bandwidth on sites??

I was thinking a similar thing, If this is happening to most web sites then surely google is slowing the internet up as well with usless traffic, I wonder if there is anywhere you can complain

Space1999.net doesn't get that much traffic from google (and I'm using google analytics on it).

The googlebot must be detecting sites (particularly forums) that change frequently, and visiting them much more often than normal to look for fresh content.

I think there is a strong case for a class action law suit to be honest....

It's theft.

That's an interesting notion... any chance of getting enough people on board, worldwide, to actually try it?
