I'm sorry Howard, but I think Voyager was the worst Star Trek.
DS9 copied Babylon 5 a wee bit, but thats no bad thing.

Unlike 'DS9', I think 'Babylon 5' did not replicate 'Space:1999'.

Default SF "Borrowing"

I think that the majority of SF films and TV series are guilty of "borrowing" ideas and concepts from other SF films and TV series.

Examples:

Fireball XL5-Spacecraft explores Deep Space and encounters many alien cultures and space phenomenon.
Star Trek TOS-Spacecraft explores Deep Space and encounters many alien cultures and space phenomenon.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea-Super Submarine explores the Ocean and fights Aliens and Seamonsters.
SeaQuestDSV-Super Submarine explores the Ocean and fights Aliens (did they ever fight a Seamonster?).

Lost in Space-Spaceship is hurled far from home and the crew have adventures searching for a way back to Earth.
Star Trek:Voyager-Spaceship is hurled far from home and the crew have adventures searching for a way back to Earth.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine-A Starfleet officer who is a veteran of a famous space battle commands a Space Station, engages in intersteller diplomacy, and is on the front line in a major interstellar war.
Babylon 5-An EarthForce officer who is a veteran of a famous space battle commands a Space Station, engages in intersteller diplomacy, and is on the front line in a major interstellar war.

The Starlost-A gigantic Space Ark is drifting helplessly through space. Several of the inhabitants have adventures as they explore the different sections of the Ark.
Space:1999-Earth's Moon is drifting helplessly through space. Alphans on the Moon have adventures as they explore different planets. (OK, that's streching a bit).

Battlestar Galactica-The survivors of a war with machines search through space for a mythical planet called Earth while the machines pursue them.
StarBlazers-The survivors of a war with another planet search through space for a mythical planet called Iscandar while their foes pursue them.

UFO-Earth is being attacked by hostile aliens. The nations of Earth team up and use cutting edge high tech weapons to fight them.
Space:Above and Beyond-Earth is being attacked by hostile aliens. The nations of Earth team up and use cutting edge high tech weapons to fight them.

The Time Tunnel-Federal Agents have adventures traveling through time.
TimeCop-A Federal Agent has adventures traveling through time.

RoboCop-A cyborg fights crime.
Holmes and YoYo-A cyborg and his human partner fight crime.
(OK, I know I'm getting silly now)

I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Cheers.

Eagle 12, brilliant analysis!
I absolutely agree with all of your examples...each and everyone is 100% true.
I can't believe you remembered Holmes and YoYo.

Just as an additional point on this:
The Starlost-A gigantic Space Ark is drifting helplessly through space.
Space:1999-Earth's Moon is drifting helplessly through space. There is an episode where the Alphans encounter a Giant Space Ark that is also drifting helplessly through space.

Cheers.

I started calling the series Deep Space:1999 only a few episodes into it's run.

Around the same tiime in the early 90s aired SeaquestSV, which I called. voyage To The Bottom Of The Seaquest.

As for comparing series, how about Captain Picard with love interest Dr Crusher? That was the original intent at the start of TNG. Along with that you have younger aggressive first officer, in love with exotic beauty alien officer with super ability (telepathy-empathic)...aka Riker and Troi.

Remind anyone of Koenig-Russel, and Verdeschi-Maya?

Default "Resistance is FUTILE!!!"

Or how about:

Space:1999-Alpha encounters a hostile, technologically superior alien race that, prior to overwhelming them militarily, states "Resistance is Futile!".

Star Trek-TNG-The Enterprise encounters a hostile, technologically superior alien race that, prior to overwhelming them militarily, states "Resistance is Futile!".

Cheers.

You are absolutely correct about those character relationships of SPACE:1999 being replicated by both STAR TREK NG and DS9!
