I see the Stargazer Moonbus accurate interior kits are now showing 'in-stock' in the Starship Modeller store.

2001: A Space Odyssey was the first movie I watched on Blu-Ray late last year. It was fantastic. Now a new release of that movie is slated for next year. Source - The Digital Bits

Meanwhile, special effects legend Douglas Trumbull has revealed that he's been working on an amazing new documentary about the making of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, called 2001: Beyond the Infinite - The Making of a Masterpiece. You can get a 3-minute peek at the documentary on his website (scroll down to 2001: A Space Odyssey - Documentary and play the video). It looks to be - at long last - THE definitive account of the making of the film... and a helluva lot of fun as well. It also seems pretty damn likely that this is being created for that new Stanley Kubrick Blu-ray box set that our sources at Warner have told us is being prepared for release next year. Very, very, VERY, VEEEEERRY cool. This box might be the Blu-ray release I'm most excited about right now, I'll tell you.

Genius, he never disappoints, Trumbull's documentary approach is brilliant.

I just read that Douglas Trumball had failed with negotiating the rights for the documentary and so it may not happen.

I guess we will have to wait and see.

Yes, Doug was over here in the UK earlier in the year all ready to film the interviews when the plug got pulled apparently. He wasn't happy.
Interestingly, this all happened before he put the teaser up on his website... I suspect he may be trying to raise a tide of support to try and get the project going again (but that's just my take on it). As you say, we'll have to wait and see.....

On a positive note, David Larson's 2001 book is progressing well (although there's still more to do on it) and the pics on Doug Trumbull's site are just a SMALL FRACTION of the material Dave has got lined up to go in there!
It's going to be well worth the wait.

I'm not surprised and I have severe doubts that we will see and extended version of the movie either.

I have a memory of the movie that I believe is a false memory but figured I would share it. I must of been watching it on TV in the 80's and there was a scene that takes place some time after the primitive tribe first encounters the monolith. The tribe comes out of their cave and sees that the monolith is gone and they freak out again. I am sure I was getting this mixed up with the scene when they first saw it but for some reason that memory sticks with me. It would have made some sense that the monolith would eventually vanish but I doubt the scene exists. And no, there were no drugs involved.

This reminds me of another cut scene ina different movie - Forbidden Planet. I saw a documentary on Sci-Fi and there was a clip of Robby in the car coming up on the Altares for the first time. It was a tracking shot, I believe, of the Robby/car model. Being a very early editing novice I thought I would try to edit this short clip back into the movie using good old VHS to VHS deck editing (talk about primitive). Anyhow I managed to do it.....except I had forgotten about the audio as the clip has the narrator talking over the clip. I didn't have the skills to re-master the audio and match it with the movie segments so that was that.

Here are some deleted scenes although I could not identify my scene in these clips.

False memory, as you say. Kubrick jealousy guarded what he regarded his definitive version of 2001 after he made the cuts only one version has been made available.

The 19mins he cut after the premier are well documented and are from scenes set on SSV, the Aries Journey to the moon and Clavius.

Looks like the trailer has been pulled from the site already. Text and pic there, but can't click on it

Sorry - Ignore me - the link doesn't open in a new link, the preview appears at the top of the main page.
