It looks like the one Martin made during his time on the comic. You are right Jim, worth what it's being auctioned for and more. Martin's work is superb even if this particular model is not screen accurate. I bet if he made one today it would be better as a lot more information is available now.

I think his work attracts a premium price because he is a "name" these works will only become more valuable over time like any other pieces of quality art.

Provenance is everything when bidding on high value items like this. If no povenance is available then your taking a gamble on something that could end up being worthless. If Martin could verify the history of the piece I for one would be a lot happier.

Thumbs up Bowers work....

I am still a fan of Martins work whatever he makes. I saw a great model he made for Steve Kyte once, in fact it's how Martin and I met....

I saw this amazing model on a shelf in Steve Kyte's apartment in London. It pulled me in right away as it looked a little Flash Gordon in style, curiously it had "failed XL5 nosecone" written at the front, which did indeed look like a Junior. I wish I had a picture of it, Steve if you are put there please post if you do have any images

I was admiring this model very much and Steve told me it was a gift from Martin, it looked great, a typical Bower design, tubular body with vane arrangements and 4 large fins with a small cockpit nose cone, it was dark red in colour with black Bic biro lines and great shading (some of Martins signature work). IMHO he still is one of the very best model makers at this kind of work.

Later I learned that part of the body was from a lamp shade, the trailing edges of the fins were from plastic coat hangers and the main part of the fuselage was a grey plastic drain pipe. The skill in the finishing was really fabulous in that he could take a large flat panel and just with paint, masking tape, a pencil and a pen and add detail to really make it pop. When you see what can be done in this way it truly is inspirational and you have to try for yourself.

He also guided me in the use of Perspex (Plexiglass) and P38 filler as construction materials. Like most industry professionals he operates on a plane well above most mere mortals and never seems to put a foot wrong in his own design work. Here is one of my all time favourites:

I see the auction has been ended early as 'the item is no longer available'.
