Ooh, if we're talking TV series as well, how about the artificial planet "Ultraworld" from Blake's 7?

Ultraworld was similiar to Time and the Rani. & well before the Borg. Space 1999 had a near identical episode starring Brian Blessed.

There was also a sf movie in 1968 called Mission Mars that
had a metallic sphere in it.

Don't call me a major buzzkill,but I really don't believe
that Tommy qualifies as a classic sf film,Tommy is more
like a fantasy rock opera than a sf film.

TV again, the biggest metal sphere I can think of is the Dyson Sphere from the Next Generation Episode 'Relics' with Scotty !
