Default Decal Colours

You often see two colours quoted for Moonbase Alpha decals, namely season one turquoise and season two dark blue. I'm afraid I'm responsible in part for that slight misnomer since in fact, both colours were used in both seasons. However, in the same way that "lab" pod has come to be the adopted name of the passenger pod with sticky out bits, it's probably best to carry on using the names.

Whatever you choose to call them, there were basically two variants. The first and most prolifically seen in the first season (hence the name) was a plain turquoisey blue on a clear background. There was always a question mark about whether these had a white background but all the original ones I've seen have been clear. The turquoise often photographs much darker too which adds to the confusion. The turquoise decals also feature on the Laser Tanks.

The second type did indeed have a white background and were a darker version of the same turquoise. The lab pod (there's that name again) as it is today, sports a set of these decals. The pod was tarted up for series two so it's unclear if these are the original decals (EDIT - they are original but are they the original original?). They were either removed or painted over and new ones applied. However, all the evidence suggests this pod had these types of decals during season one anyway and indeed they may have been printed this way originally for use on the red striped rescue pod. Decals like this can also be seen on the original 22" model today although during some minor restoration, it was found that the original season one type decals still lurked under the later paintwork.

As a footnote, it should also be mentioned that in the very early days, there was a hand painted shadowed edge to the Earth and a figure eight flight path going around the Earth and the Moon on the CM decals of the first 44" model but this detail was dropped very early on. It wasn't repeated on the passenger pod from the same period so presumably it might have been added just for a close up.

That version (withe the flight path) was used on the side of the Airfix Eagle Transporter Kit box (OK, I know it was actually fundimensions' tooling) but the box and instructions were produced by Airfix when the kit was first released.

Wow - I love little gems like this.

We learn more and more every day

Time to re-decal my PE fleet with decals I obtained from Chris at the con...even if they are not 'precisely' the correct pantone shade, they're a h*ll of a lot closer than what comes as standard on these models.

The type used on the side of the Airfix box was actually based on the spacesuit badges which had even more colours and is probably the source of all the incorrect decals that have appeared on so many models. The kit box artwork is clearly the lazy man's route. It's not like there aren't decent pictures of the studio model decals out there. I HATE those multicoloured ones on the PE models. Even Airfix and Fundimension screwed it up big time. The stupid thing is the single colour ones are the easiest version to reproduce. Where's the problem??????!

At least Dinky got it right.

I found another early publicity photo that shows a similar figure eight painted on the decal on the right hand side of the CM too but, like it's twin, it didn't seem to linger very long.

Unless you want to model that particular Eagle at that particular time, I think it's safe to dismiss the flight path versions as a curio and not typical of the decals used in the series particularly as the passenger pod from the same period sports the plain single colour versions we know and love. There's a tiny argument for PE putting the multi-coloured ones on the CM but they never featured anywhere else and even then they looked different.

I hope this isn't off-topic; just my two cents for the "reality" of the logo/crest things, as though S:99 really happened...
The "flight path" version had been in use for sometime, but was being phased out for a more basic (stylized) version for the coming new millenium; not all Eagles had had the old crest replaced at the time Koenig took command of Alpha.
Why do I bring this up? If anyone wants to do a 'spacecraft evolution' series of models, it might be interesting as background info. (I've thought about doing so myself... start with the Apollo LEM, go to the SHADO Moon Mobile, then the Swift (perhaps without the long-range tanks nor the one giant engine bell) and end up with the Eagle. Of course, I should finish several of the projects I've already started before starting a new one. Oh, and then there's that Pod-U-Like contest to distract me further... Any other model builders have problems like this? )
