Ok, I had an idea for shooting studio scale models, because I thought people would be into it. Some are, but many are worried, skeptical or downright hostile to the idea. The thing I hear over and over is "do you know what this cost

Yes, grabbed, horrible, never mind ......... I hereby propose CARDBOARD STAR WARS. Each episode to be crammed into ten minutes, with all props, vehicles and characters being made out of cardboard and other rubbish. No money is to be spent on materials other than glue, tape and paint. Each episode to be shot in a different Uk region so everyone can participate.
Build nothing yet, let's talk about it first. Anyone up for it? |

1. I need volunteers first
2. Where are they........those are the regions we choose. 3. We discuss scales and finish (to paint or not to paint) 4. We build some models to find our feet, some get sent in by post. 5. We set a date for the new hope episode and build as much as possible. 6. The day of the shoot we run a workshop for parents and kids building all that we still need. 7. That afternoon we shoot as things become available. 8. We put out the first video and use it to promote the next event. That's my plan, what do you reckon? |

Before tackling your points below, I've a few general comments. If you're looking at making cardboard models, then there are various approaches, including someone/several people designing them in colour on computer and printing them out and assembling them. Being in colour, no painting is needed. Also, you can control the overall stylistic approach. One approach is to do it in a highly stylised 'blocky' style, including the characters, such as in this film:
http://youtu.be/is6_Wos09Gw 1. I need volunteers first Not a direct offer to volunteer yet, more an expression of interest. Though I'm happy building stuff, if you want mini-pyro see below (Point 7). 2. Where are they........those are the regions we choose. I'm in London. If there are others in the area, please step forward! 3. We discuss scales and finish (to paint or not to paint) See above for my general thoughts. 4. We build some models to find our feet, some get sent in by post. If they're designed on computer there's no need to post anything - just email the files and the recipient can print them out and assemble them. Alternatively, or additionally, if some people don't have colour printers, others could print the sheets and post them quite cheaply. 5. We set a date for the new hope episode and build as much as possible. I've no particular ideas on this, I imagine it will be collectively discussed. 6. The day of the shoot we run a workshop for parents and kids building all that we still need. Ditto above, if it's not already been made and distributed via the design-on-computer-then-print-out-and-assemble method. 7. That afternoon we shoot as things become available. Ditto above. Though I have to say at this stage that if you wanted me to do any mini-pyro, I'd be more comfortable doing it at home as it's something that needs to be done in a highly controlled setting. I could then email the required footage. 8. We put out the first video and use it to promote the next event. Good idea. |

Not what I was thinking, but quite a clever suggestion, solves all sorts of problems, can I add to it, designs to be totally at your discretion, every one an individual, no style sheet at all. In faact..........we could do both..........scratch built rebels, computer print out empire, more inclusive of peoples skills.
Yes or nononononononono? |

No reason why not. I'd like to add that I was merely chucking in some ideas and not trying to lay down any kind of law - the example of Cuboid Star Trek (which I like as a style) was presented simply to get some debate going and illustrate the possibilities, if people don't like it and want to go for something else, fine.
It's also striking how realistic card models can be, I've seen amazing model warships, aircraft, zeppelins, you name it. And one of the great things about the original trilogy (or, as I think of it, simply The Trilogy as there are no others) is that vehicle designs were founded on fairly simple basic shapes: you've got your Death Star (a ball); your Star Destroyers (wedges, with boxy superstructures); TIE fighters (a ball with hexagonal sheets on outriggers); etc. |

I actually think its a great idea, but might not press some modellers buttons, if we get a consensus I would be happy to go with it, mind you, at this rate it'll be down to you and me anyhow, c'mon guys, let's have some input, please?

How about everything cuboid, or at least rectangular, a box shaped deathstar appeals, and they would be so simple to design and build?
