OK so after the major cock up I was glad to see the window sculpt was relativity undamaged.
It's a bit rough here and there but I think it will be easier to just sand the resin version later. Ready for round two. ![]() |

Neo, you could try using dental alganate to take a mould. It mixes with water and sets in about 5 minutes.
This can be used to make some quick casts of the final parts if required. After a few hours, the alganate mould will shrink and dry out, but works fine if you're quick! It's cheap and you can get it from Tiranti |

I never thought of that. I've got some left over from some spfx make up I did.
I'll give that a go next time thanks Dave |

Back to this now after the recent cock up molding the window.
Well after re-doing the mold with a new batch of RTV I got a decent casting out and once that was cleaned up I decided that it's a bit weighty to just rely on superglue to keep in in place, so came up with a plan which involved drilling out a small area on the back. Into this I placed a small bolt and covered it in dental acrylic, once dry I can just slam a nut on this from the inside of the bell and I've got a stronger bond  ![]() |

Great progress! Glad you sorted out your RTV moulding rubber problems.
It's also interesting to see the 'secrets' of your modelmaking! I'm assuming you 'turned' the clay pattern there on the plastic turntable it's mounted on - I recognise the surface pattern of the turntable as I've got two identical ones! - assuming it's one of these: http://www.bonsai-uk.co.uk/bonsai-turntable-p-557.html |

Well spotted McTodd.
It wasnt as easy as I thought it would be though cuz of the bumpy surface of the thing and the fact that it wouldnt turn smoothly. Anyway here's the sculpted piece and the cast part after some hollowing out and a fair amount of drilling. ![]() |

What you want is a potters wheel.....
Again you nailed it, your part looks bang on to my eye. That is nice work, it reminds me that people with talent can find workable solutions and still hit the mark for quality. |

Here's the next part I've finished, (well almost, ignore the handle it's just temporary).
The lower part of the hinges are made from strips of lead cut and curved around a drill bit. It's functional and the plan is to have the switch installed behind this for the flood lights. Here's the real one...(you probably would have guessed that) Here's mine... ![]() |

I remember seeing this at the cinema, I think I mentioned earlier my mate Simon Turk from school ended up with half of the minature sets from the movie.

What a lucky bugger.
What did he actually get, I'd be very interested to see anything he had. |

Just a small update.
I've been searching for quite a while to find the right type and size of propeller for this and because it's not built to any specific scale it was just a case of measuring the diameter. Anyway I picked up the last two in the local model shop which were close enough (well I thought so until I got them home). When compared to the real ones I could see the blades were a bit different and the hub also, so after a bit of carving, sanding and checking I think now it's close enough ,(as long as you ignore the fact that mine are left handed and the originals are right handed) ![]() ![]() ![]() So after messing about with one long enough I'm going to take a mold of it so the other's identical. |

Getting closer to the end now. Soon it'll just be a case of sticking all the components on.
Here's the foot holes cast ready to stick onto the lower part of the base. ![]() The finished article compared to the real one. ![]() ![]() |

All that's left now is the riveting all over the sphere.
Anyone know any good tips for doing them as I must admit I'm not looking forward to it |
