Default Eagle Heavy Lifter

I've been thinking about designing and building a new type of Eagle transporter - something not seen in the series, but could exist in that world. I wanted to try to make something bigger, something that could move larger payloads. So, my Eagle Heavy Lifter project was born. As the payload body will be larger the nosecone would be wider, so I started with that. In theory there will be three, maybe four seats in there.

Under the cockpit will be a small cargo bay or buggy hold, and the front of the nosecone will eventually open.

I'll update again when I've got more to show - might be a while!

Very cool! I am looking forward to seeing more. What SW are you using, LW?

In the series, I liked how the technology used common interfaces -- that way the Eagle nosecone could be seen docking on the Ultraprobe, and the Eagle could take on different payload pods. It will be interesting to see if you follow that design philosophy. As a heavy lifter, maybe it could take on multiple standard payload pods in series or parallel.

This looks promising, like the nosecone idea.

I noticed there were extra fixing points for the frame attachments so looking forward to seeing this grow.

I did think that if extra crew were needed that they may follow the same idea as with trucks, put a "sleeper" cab on the back and perhaps reconfigure the space frames by extending them above and below the longer CM unit.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely trying to keep to a modular design, but it might be a different set of modules to the standard Eagle - but made in the same factory. The payload module will be much bigger, perhaps as much as twice the width, and possibly two storeys. I'm working on getting the scale right, but I'm having trouble finding out what the real world dimensions of the Eagle are supposed to be. I've searched the forum but can't find anything conclusive.

Here are links to dimensions from a 1977 STARLOG publication:

Hey, we both had a similar idea!

My Heavy Lift Eagle is larger than the standard Eagle, but nowhere near twice the size. I want it to fit on the existing launch pads.

Mine is still in the concept stage, it will be many months before I have anything to show.

It will be interesting to see what direction yours goes in.

Cheers

Thanks, Steve, those links are going to be very useful!

Eddie, The Heavy Lifter should still fit onto the launch pad - just! I need to work out the dimensions for the pad to make sure I've got it all right before I jump too far into it.

Working on the production line idea I'm hoping to use some parts from the Hawk as well as the Eagle.

nice render/design and good idea, ld like to see the middle window narrower to loose some of the roundness

Thanks, everyone. I'm planning on using the standard leg module, as seen on the standard Eagle, (six of them!) I put together a quick test of the foot mechanism coming out of the housing. The design seems to have intended this to happen, but I've never seen it done before. Most of you know much more about Space 1999 than me, so maybe you can put me right if this has been seen before?

Continuing to block out the shapes. Some of this is rough, and mostly untextured, but I'll tidy it all up once I get the main parts together.

I'm no expert, but I don't think the suspension has to be completely straight for it to fit into the housing. At least, the way I allow the undercarriage to retract, it doesn't require it. Try leaving it slightly angled and see what you think.

Looks great! I'd extend the nose of the CM a little so it's more Eagle like, just to see what it looks like, and perhaps try removing the slats in the centre window.
Can't wait to see more.
Edit: Try cutting a standard Eagle CM down the centre (I did this a few years ago, experimenting) and then add the centre window.
You'll then have thicker bulkhead frames between the standard windows and the centre one, and they should finish almost level.
This will give you a flat area at the front tip of the CM which can be filled with either lights or sensors, removing the egg shape at the tip, and aid the 'look' a little, tying it in with a standard CM and give you a familiar curve to the top and bottom edges when viewed from the front.
I'd tend to retain the angles of the standard walkway cages where the frames form and X, then the interior will naturally be wider. You could add height to them without ruining the look once a spine (I guess that will be more complex and beefed up a little?) is put in place - much in the same way a Hawk 'spine' is narrower and less complex for a smaller craft.

Howard , last night i did the nose , its complete , i am just amending my crysis internal Eagle cockpit to fit the " Howard " nose cone , what do you envisage goes into the newly created space in the middle with the new window ? seating , storage space ?

i am hoping to finish the cockpit tonight , and i was thinking of adding in more seating to the nose , so u can have pilots , co pilots , and addiitional passengers up front so to speak , wondering what u envisioned from your end ?

Roger

p.s i will post in a quick pic of the nose in a few mins below )

1st pic is the internal cockpit being worked on as of 2am last night , gonna finish that tonight based on your feedback , once model is complete i will add it to crysis for testing , take a few in game screenshots and show you those too )

the model and pics below have now been officially added to the Crysis 1999 mod , in my thred , and this version Eagle will be part of the Eagle fleet in game )
