Ha ha!!

We can also build the Console Room as well, but unfortunately it would stubbornly refuse to be "bigger on the inside"!!

So, as I mentioned previously, I whipped out some satin black paint and painted the outer bit of the base.

While that was drying I hunted out from the depths of the workshop the butyl pond liner I had bought ten years ago! This one actually had the freight sticker on it that showed when it was sent to what was then my local branch of B&Q! One decade later, I opened the pack, wiped off the dust and left the liner opened up to let any condensation dry off.

Another little job - the swivelling castors I'd used for dome rotation weren't very good - sometimes they wouldn't turn all the way to follow the direction of rotation, so they would drag. An easy fix - I bought some fixed castors!

A couple of minutes later, and the new wheels were in place. The wheels sit a few mm lower than the swivelling ones, but that's not a problem, the gap between the upper and lower domes has been reduced slightly, AND they work!!

With the black paint dried, I cut a thin strip of liner and stapled it around the inside of the fender base:

Next - shock, horror!! I will actually be finishing off a section!!

Just wondered when the Emperors jubilee was, and what colour bunting he wanted.

I think I have some serious catching up to do, my last proper update was TWO MONTHS ago, so I'd better get on with it!!

I'm not going to go through every single step I took (there are more photos on my Photobucket account), but I'll show you all the major stuff.

OK, so the last thing I did was to add some black paint to the underside of the base. Now for the sides and top.

All the holes left by the screws as well as the joins in the fibreglass "D" sections around the bumper were filled. The top was also filled, everything was sanded, filled and primered (about four of five times!), until eventually I had a smooth, paint-ready fender section:

I then did the same thing to the skirt, dome and shoulders:

At this stage I added locating pegs and holes to all the Emperor's sections, and as it was a nice day, I did it outside!

All the sections fit together snugly, all facing the right way - much more secure when the completed Dalek is being pushed about!!

The main dome was a bit more of a challenge. The single horizontal ribs on the two rear inset sections were quite straightforward to blend in:

... but I decided to get a bit "curvy" with the ones on the front! Here's a "work in progress" shot:

One thing I need to mention at this stage is colour. I've had various musings on the Emperor's colour scheme before (I even tried a few different gold car paints I'd bought from Halfords), but now was the time to decide. My idea was to do the colour scheme as a "nod" towards the New Series Daleks. The first NSD prop that appeared in the episode "Dalek" was painted about five different shades of gold, bronze, etc., whereas in subsequent stories the paint jobs were much simplified, therefore I decided to use the simplified colour scheme as seen in "Parting Of The Ways" onward, but in reverse, so I got my local car paint shop to mix up 10 aerosol cans of the pale yellow gold and 6 cans of the bronze. You'll see what it looks like in a moment!

I knew there would be a rush to the finish, so I decided to paint and assemble some of the small parts first - the eyestalk (satin black, Nissan silver and Ford Bermuda/light blue):

... the gun and plunger (Nissan silver, and the first section of the sucker arm sprayed with gold):

... the eyestalk cowl:

... and the skirt hemispheres (bronze):

At last, all the main sections were ready for paint!! I started with the base. The bumpers on the original NSD props were painted with a rubberised paint made by Tetrosyl. This doesn't seem to exist any more, so I found a similar brand and used that:

Next, the skirt and shoulders, painted with the pale gold:

The top dome was painted gold as well, then the last section to be done was the main dome. The outer parts were sprayed with the pale gold and left to dry overnight (the paint dries very quickly) ...

... and was then masked off, so the inset sections could be sprayed with Ford Champagne Gold (which was the original colour the K-9 prop was sprayed, as it looks silver in certain lighting conditions):

And so there it was, all done. A complete set of parts, ready to be assembled. It took about five hours to put everything back together, but it couldn't be hurried.

This is it - it's taken ten years (on and off - mostly off!), in that time I've moved house, got married, changed jobs twice and retired, all the time with the Emperor in various stages of being built.

Anyway, enough talk, here he is.

The Emperor was ready in time for his first outing - "Smallspace" at Hanslope Village Hall on the 1st July, organised by Mat Irvine. The Emperor meets the neighbours!!

With all the excitement over, our golden friend is now safely in storage.

I've got a lot of space in my workshop now ... I doubt if it will last long though!!

This one's for you, Mum.
