Default Another Time, Another Place - Fanderson wants to hear your thoughts!

Quote:
Hi everyone,

Ian Fryer here, you new FAB editor. We're working hard on FAB 60 as I
type, but could use some help for the Timelash feature.

I'm looking for comments on the Space: 1999 story Another Time, Another
Place. I know this is one of the most popular Anderson shows,
particularly among American and Canadian members, and I'd really
welcome feedback from all fans of the show, even if it's not one of
your favourite episodes.

You can post comments here if you want, but I'd rather people read them
first in FAB, so please e-mail your thoughts to
Timelash@fanderson.org.uk

Thanks all

Ian

the only thing I didn't like about the episode was the 'two brains' thing. Her living a fantasy life of the life Alphans had on the planet was a cool idea.
Helena studying John's double's body in the morgue, and Koenig coming in as she covered it with the sheet was creepy.
I loved the J/H moment when Helena's double kissed Koenig before she died. That is one of my favorite John/Helena kisses, and there were so few of them in Y1.
Helena still holding the flower at the end was touching.

The 'two brains' thing is cringe-worthy in its silliness (especially given that the thermograph shows only one brain), but the rest of the episode is interesting & touching, one I remembered for years after first viewing.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that Regina has Simmonds' commlock clipped to her belt in the opening shot, where she starts to climb the Main Mission stairs? In the next shot where she runs into Koenig's office, her commlock bears a photo of her.

Thing many of us noticed was the subtle differences between some of the characters and their doubles... Victor's hair being one. Tanya looks very different to her alpha based counterpart, where as Sandra still looks pretty much herself. I particularly like the visit to the other Alpha, and yes, the way they did the Koenig walking in on his dead self scene.

The thing that really jars for me is Paul's latest installment in his Moses look alike saga emerging with the stun gun and demanding they leave. Paul always seems to overact in these situations... the two brains thing is neither here nor there for me, just nonsensical

I msut admit that I had to remind myself of this episode and watched it again last night. I agree that the two brains is just silly and didn't need to mentioned and other explanations could have been provided. It was a flakey as Regina's sunburn.

I thought the rest of the episode was very good and feels like an end of series episode with some hope being provided that those on alpha would return home or at least end their trek across space. The desolation of the planet and the loss of John and Alan added a nice somber style which I thought was refreshing for Space 1999 and sci-fi in general were not everything works out just fine all the time. I think the fact that they seemed to be surviving on a dead rock rather than a garden of Eden made it easier for the story and let John make the decision to go back to Alpha...along with Victor's wise words.

There's some nice shots in the episode...I particular liked John's chair remaining in Mission Control and the mortuary scene was well cut together.

Nice episode...and good to watch it again.

The music is among the very best of the entire series, IMO.

Thank you all for your contributions, both on this site and by e-mail. They are greatly appreciated and invaluable for preparing our Another Time Another Place article.

It was fun watching the episode again after such a long time, as well.

Best wishes ,

Everything mentioned I agree with...

Alienation hit a lot of the points I would have.

Except I never cringe at the scene with Helena looking over the dead John and then enters alive John...I found it VERy interesting...her modesty about it...like she didn't want him to know that she was almost mournful *for lack of a better word*over the dead John.

OK...I just watched this one again...

been a LONG time since I have...

but did anyone notice that when the initial "split" happened in the beginning, Regina was the ONLY NOt to have a split occur?

Just a thought on why she was the way she was for the rest of the ep. *including the 2 brains*

It was a spooky one when I first watched when I was a kid. Traveling to the other Moonbase was hauntingly effective. Plus the shot of the crew leaving the Eagle still is a great visual effect...

Yes, I noticed Regina's 'solidity' when everyone else split.

And they liked that shot so much they used it again in Testament of Arkadia.

Like most S1 episodes, this one leaves us with a lot of questions.

1. Alt-Victor said that there were people on Earth, before the Alt-Alpans arrived (he said there were relics of them everywhere). Who were they and what happened to them?

2. If there was a civilization on Alt-Earth, what destroyed it. Was it a nuclear war? A natural disaster?

3. How long were the Alt-Alpans on Earth? I'm thinking at least ten years or so.

4. Both Reginas die when they confront each other in their minds. This seems to indicate that contact between the duplicate Alphans would be fatal to both of them (why, I wonder, the episode never says)

Anyway, so bearing that in mind, how come when our Helena meets her double, Alt-Helena soon keels over, but nothing happens to our Helena?

5. Why was Regina affected so badly at the start, but no one else was?
