Default Johnny Byrne has died

Martin on the Catacombs confirms scriptwriter (for some of the best S99 episodes, IMHO) Johnny Byrne has died. Mateo Latosa (Powys Media owner) adds more details over on OnlineALpha. How sad.

May he rest in peace. So many people from this era are starting to die. It only feels like yesterday that they were actually making it all.

That is right Tony, a lot of people who we know from our favorite TV shows are passing on this year. My how time flies, it seems to pass in an instant these days.

I'm stunned. One of the happiest moments in my life was watching Testament Of Arkadia with him at Breakaway. Just him, me, a couple of drinks in the hotel bar. He even called me publicly "my friend".

Always happy to talk, chat, discuss, always approachable.

Travel well my friend. We will never forget you. I will never forget you.

Please excuse me while I sneak into a corner and cry.

The first and only time I chatted with JB was at one of the Pinewood events standing outside the entrance door with Keith Wilson. It was just the three of us and only five minutes worth of chat but he was very friendly and open. I remember thinking what a nice guy. God bless you sir.

I'm very saddened to hear this, RIP Mr. Byrne. He wrote most of my favorite Space stories.

Only just this evening, I read the sad news from an Online Alpha post, to which I replied with some thoughts, but I'll say a few here too.

Johnny certainly did a lot for the series over the years, from writing 11 episodes and "Message from Moonbase Alpha," the most of any script writer on the series, being the Y1 script editor, and in thinking so much about grand thematic ideas. Yet he continued to care about the series even after it was done with its initial broadcast. That was clear in panels and small group discussions at conventions, and in his posting on the mailing list in years past.

He was always very interesting to listen to, and to talk with. He had so many memories and thoughts about the series he had to share, and it was clear he enjoyed sharing them. He also had continuing interest in its future, and furthermore, it was clear he cared about the fans. Though the times at the conventions were few and short, he impressed me as a fine a kind and intelligent person.

My favorite episode, not just in Space: 1999, but in all of science fiction television, is "The Metamorph" -- written by Johnny Byrne. I happened to re-watch this episode (04/03), the day he passed away. As always, the last line of dialog, my favorite in the episode, resonated:

"We're all aliens, until we get to know one another."

May you rest in peace, Johnny Byrne.
You will be remembered, and missed.

Very sad news. I was quite chuffed that an original scriptwriter wrote 'Message...'. That fact, and the memories shared here, indicate he was not only a talented writer but also had real affection for the show and its fans. Sincere condolences to any of his family & friends who may read this. Thanks for everything, Mr Byrne.

God bless him! I had a brief exchange of emails with Johnny back on the old online Alpha discussion board and being a fellow Irishman we spoke about Ireland before he left and I filled some of the blanks about how the country had changed. There were only 3-4 mails back and forth but I found him to be a perfect gentleman and a very spiritual human being, which was evident from his scripts for the show. IMO Johnny's scripts were always the most interesting and entertaining.

RIP Johnny

Message from Moonbase Alpha actually had moments in Sandra's speech that made me cry.

There were more than just a few tears in the conference room where "Message" was shown...

I know I'm a few years late, but I wanted to add my comments.

Johnny Byrne gave us some of the best episodes of Space: 1999. Another Time, Another Place, Dragon's Domain, Testament Of Arkadia, among the best. In the real year 1999, he returned and gave us Message From Moonbase Alpha (in which Zienia Merton reprised her role as Sandra Benes) as a way to properly wrap up the series (Message is included in the Special Features of the 30th Anniversary DVD's I have).

Mr. Byrne also worked on Doctor Who, and he created my favourite Who Companion, Nyssa of Traken.

He is much missed.
