If they got the idea you were a fan, they had contempt for you, they called people who actually watched the show 'peasants' or 'suckers'........
There were SOME people I worked with on Alien that felt the same way about me and SOME of the other "enthusiasts" on the model unit.
I remember someone saying within my earshot...."wtf are FANS doing working on a movie"! Ironically, if it were not for us FANS, with our SPECIALIST spaceship modelling skills and enthusiasm...under Bill Pearson, Martin Bower, et al., I dread to think of the quality of models that would have been produced.
Fortunately, they were only a few, of those nepotistic old codgers and overall we had a terrific model unit crew of true artisans, who knew quality when they saw it and what was needed.
Thankfully, it seems that nowadays this attitude has mostly gone so far as I know, and that applies to the US too!
Long may that continue!

Well, you'd think so....but even famous people who are 'fans' have been treated that way. I remember I went to a talk by some people I worked with from time to time, and they were heaping contempt on DAN O'BANNON. Yeah, I'm not kidding here. Seems when Dan worked on Star Wars he went to the model shop and took some photos of the stuff being built, and they thought that was fan type behavior and had him thrown out...and they were still making fun of him years after, despite his amazing record. They also made fun of his purple pants, as if that mattered.

Cheers, Bill.

I think you have to have a pyro license to get those here.

I see from his portfolio that Bill also built the gun that killed Blake. Bill, were you also responsible for the mysterious collection of weaponry the federation adopted in that final scene or was it a group effort? I assume it had never been necessary to arm so many troopers before.

Actually if you look closely you can see one of the Fed guards has Blake's gun, the gun that started this thread in the first place...

Here's a photo of one of the matchead pyro fuses we used at BBC.

Hi!
When we shot the final scene for Blake's demise - Jim Francis (in charge of VFX)said -make it very definite - lots of gore! They only had one costume - we shot out of sequence - so check out the previous shots with Blake's bloody shirt!
The weapons were whatever was off the shelf, at the time.
Cheers, Bill.

Hi Bill,

Wa-heyyy!! Some photos of the Blake-killer gun wold be great!

If I remember correctly, the prop is modular, isn't it?

The "butt" is a mini camera tripod, I think I've got one somewhere ...

Hi,

I've just stumbled across this forum by pure chance and have found it utterly fascinating. I've only ever made one kit and that was Comet's Liberator but I just wanted to say how brilliant it is that some of the original 'Blake's 7' props have survived after all these years. It is also great to know that the are all being lovingly restored by talented peps in this forum

For me personally, 'Blake's 7' was *the* greatest show the BBC ever produced so thanks to you all and those in this forum who worked on that series.

Interesting that Blake's gun was a toy version of the Star Wars stormtrooper's gun, which was in turn made out of a British Sterling submachine gun.
I remember my neighbour had one of those stormtrooper gun toys. I tried for ages to get my mom to buy me one or for my neighbour to trade his for something, but I never did get one.
Now I want one again!
