I must admit, I wasn't planning on bringing anything, just a camera!

Right guys I have to make an addmition ....

After meeting Richard today and him putting his key in the original Orac it was ok width wise but the length was wrong, too long...
So I went and put mine in and it fit perfectly.

So when I got back home I came online to check the thread, because he said he made it from the measurements I'd put up.

All the other measurements are right, but the true length is 68mm.
I don't know what I was thinking when I said 78mm.

Im very sorry if anyone has wasted their time making one.

Brilliant Andy, great to say hello again and fun with the Orac off, was just going to ask about the size..... can now cut a bit off mine and test again in November if Mat has his on display the model swap...
(the photos you had were great, bet Exterminator would like to see them for his flight deck build)...
Also found more domes in the Gemini kit, and there is smaller one with a hole in it....mmmm
Thanks again...

Richard it would be better if you could get one of the early Gemini kit as it was cast in grey.

Many thanks to all for these great photos your sharing of scratch build Orac key builds and a special thanks to MoonbaseAlpha for the dimensions of the actual Key size, that will also help me with the full Orac build(I'm thinking of doing a Season 1 Orac as that seems to be the hardest to see in scratch build form. Most people go for Season 2-3 or 4 style Oracs. I think Exterminator may have built 3 replica's so far for various seasons.

Getting back to the Orac key itself, does anyone have any more photos of the original key? I'd love to know exactly what the colour of the original PCB and parts were. From what I can ascertain looking at the blurry shot, there's some kind of magnet in the center under the now positively identified Revell Gemini kit dome with hole in the center.

So that would indicate that the activation is simply a magnet to activate a reed switch on Orac for switching the famous computer on.

I've been pondering the kinds of things I could put in Orac without detracting from the original look. Probably an MP3 player that would toggle the relays in time to the music along with Peter Tuddenham voice overs(personal use and have the original recordings purchased legitimately for any BBC staff who may be getting concerned), so you could use ORAC as a music player(I know, ORAC would be horrified at the concept) or as an actual Orac phrase exclaimer. Oh to be able to put together some kind of a voice synthesizer setup, where your voice could be sampled then played back in ORAC tones. But baby steps first and then I'll go from there. There's a lot of room in an ORAC so lot's of places to discreetly hide Arduino or Raspberry Pi's etc for making ORAC an actual useful computer as opposed to just a replica. While my ideas may not be 100% inline with what ORAC would consider worthwhile processing I figure if I'm going to build an ORAC, why not have absolute fun.
