Default Messenger spacecraft Mercury flyby

NASA's Messenger spacecraft flew by the largely unmapped planet Mercury this week. Here is the NASA page with a nice post-encounter image:

There should be more images in the near future.

I always forget to post 'real space' stuff on this forum... thanks for being on the ball, Ace!
What a cool pic that is! I can't wait for more as the probe wings its way around Mercury again, and finally settles into orbit to really begin it's work!
Nice to be back there after all these years. Mercury, I mean. It looks so much like Earth's moon, yet there are subtle, and in some cases striking, differences.

I love the clocks ticking away showing how far they've come and how far there still is till the science pack sets down. It would be a rather hot place to be. I remember the scene in the movie Sunshine where they see the tiny dot of Mercury racing across the face of the Sun.

And the Space:1999 tie in???? The photos of Vivaldi crater(s)! He composed the music we've all heard in Dragon's Domain, "Autumn", I believe.

Actually, the music in "Dragon's Domain" was Albinoni's Adagio in G minor. I wonder if there's an Albinoni Crater on Mercury...
