the top FIRE DEPARTMENT lettering seems thinner and slimmer than the FIRE DEPT on the yellow one on the bottom pic, any suggestions? Im not quite sure of the scale just yet

Not sure on the red engines Mike but for all of the Thunderbird craft themselves the numbers and probably the lettering as well where Futura Bold. There was a few old letraset catalogues on E:bay yesterday. I suggest you try and pick one up as it will be invaluable.

A lot of the Thunderbird vehicles (including from the looks of things, those in the picture) used Grotesque font.

(I thought it was Grotesque on Thunderbird 2 as well - apart from the numbers...?)

I don't think it is...well at least not on this model. It's possible it was used on others I haven't got a detailed shot of the nose on the smaller models to check.

Here is the Grotesque MT Bold font...

The Grotesque Black (below) is a better match but the width of the letters on the prop looks more condensed. Look at the letter "H" for example.

Frustratingly for me (because I need this font for my TB2 model) Futura Bold (Which I'm sure is used for the numbers) has the same problem with the letter "H"....

The font on the Thunderbird One launch prop looks different again and in fact differs between the TV prop (below left) and movie prop (below right). TB3 uses the same font as TB1. In fact I'm pretty sure this another variant of Grotesque as Dave suggested but this time it's Grotesque MT condensed. The letter "R" appears to be the give-a-way.

The 'R' is always a big give away - which is why I didn't think that Futura Bold was right. Futura is quite wide and short, whereas the font on the models is quite long and thin. Although the '2' is definatley Futura Bold.

Check out the font type Grotesque 9.
