Default Just when you thought you had seen it all!

Well.... there you are That is not a comment on the workmanship but perhaps more a comment on how difficult it would actually be to make the real TB2 fly. Looks a little like a truck has run over TB2 and squished the pod into the wings.

That model is a slope soarer. It uses the same principle as a hang glider in that you find a ridge or flat sided hill which has the wind blowing towards it. The wind has to follow the contours of the ground i.e. rise up over the hill and if you launch your model into this rising air, it'll stay aloft all the time the wind blows. Slope soarers have to be fairly sleek though because they have to be able to penetrate into the oncoming wind otherwise you've a long walk to retrieve the model. It is startling to most people to see someone hand launch a glider like this and watch it almost immediately go up. One of the brilliant things about slope soaring is that you can watch the model flying around with a real landscape behind it as apposed to most forms of flying where you're just looking up watching a silhouette flying against a blue (if you're lucky) background.

It is. I go with a group of friends every couple of months down to the south coast. There's all sorts of fun to be had like flying limbo between two posts under a line and see who can go the lowest or how many times you can fly under the line in two minutes. The other thing we do is fly combat. Again there are choices. You can either call it last man in the air which is to try and knock your opponent out of the sky or try and hit the transmitter aerial of your opponent or the more sedate version of sticking a length of VHS tape to the back of the models and merely trying to touch your opponents tape.

A mate of mine, Geoff, had built himself a beautiful and very large 1/6th scale ASW 17 sailplane. He'd spent months finishing it to a very high standard and this was it's first flight. Usual practice is to get someone else to hand launch it for you first time so you've got both hands on the transmitter incase you have to apply any radical trim changes quickly. Anyway, this thing launches perfectly but it's proving a bit of handful because of the blustery conditions so Geoff is concentrating like mad with his hands firmly locked on the transmitter which of course then makes the ideal opportunity for Alistair to walk up behind him, undo Geoff's trousers and pull them down around his ankles with Geoff unable to do anything about it except squirm. Yes, it's a blast.
