Default rusty mechanism question

hi everyone - I just got a platic capt scarlet cap gun and the mechanism is rusty

it still works but needs cleaning up

no way I'm going to try to seperate the gun to get in there so I wonder if anyone has any advice on how to get rid of the rust without melting the gun

if it was all metal I'd just dunk it but I don't think I can do that + it has paper badges built in and dunking would destory them

cheers all
Mike

ps - I know there are products which will attack rust but my query is really in relation to how safe they would be to spray on 45 year old plastic

I have emailed the makers so if anyone is interested watch this space

that said, if you have an old toy its not always obvious what type of plastic its made of ie Jenolite might be ok on an airfix kit but may melt or stain the white cap gun - difficult to test too unless you have a completely wrecked example

Its in a plastic bottle so the answer would be no,it causes the rusted parts to go black, the rust never came back after use

good point - hmmm there's different types of plastic though so not 100% it wouldn't react in some way to the cap gun..?

did you have to scrub the metal..? I ask as the gun mechanism is quite well hidden, no way to get to it really

Put it this way : the active ingredient in Jenolite is the exact same acid used in Coca Cola. In fact, Coca Cola makes a very efficient rust-eater/degreaser. I've used old coke to derust and degrease several engine blocks. It also eats the enamel off your teeth, which is why your teeth feel funny and soft after drinking it.

To get rid of the rust, put some coke on, and scrub with a wire brush, and it will come off fairly quickly. On the metal, not your teeth...

fab I'll give it a try

how about getting the 2 halves of the white plastic cap gun apart..? I tried oven cleaner and acetone but got no result - admittedly I only exposd it for a couple of minutes - soaking might do it but might attack the plastic..?

would the glue they used have part melted the gun to get a good tight join..?
