I think it does look much better than the original.

IIRC the filming models were built out of something cheap, like foam core) and they put those basic hulls in a room full of school kids and a big stack of model kits for detailing. That is why you see a lot of sprues on the models- the kids were just having fun and didn't care (or possible even know you traditionally remove the parts from the tree before gluing..)
