Default Great Effects and Models

As a companion to the other thread, what are the shots that really look authentic to you?

My first nomination is for an overhead shot of Ocean Pioneer in Danger At Ocean Deep. For some reason, everything about it looks real.

I thought the wave motion in that shot wasn't slow enough but otherwise quite good.

I always liked TB2 hurling itself back into the air after crashing in "Terror In New York City". It had a great sense of weight and momentum.

The Elevator vehicles leaving the pod in "Trapped in the Sky" is my nomination. Lots of atmospheric dust, engine revs, and filmed at just the right speed to give the illusion of weight when the suspension rocks the miniature as it leaves the ramp. Never fails to give me chills....

The tilt-fan copter in the UFO episode Ordeal, especially the last shot as it settles amongst the trees (has anyone made a model of this?)

The UFO crashing into the house in ESP. This startled me when I first saw it as I thought of the ufos as being much smaller. That large scale UFO model must have been a handful spinning on wires.

The lunar module re-entry burning-up nose effect in Conflict.

Good nomination SW. Yes, the UFO hitting the house was very, very good.

The first one that comes to mind is from 'Doppelganger': the Phoenix spacecraft in orbit with the sun rising in the background. Beautiful shot.

The rocket launch in 'Doppelganger' is superb as well.

I also liked the 'Markers Universal' trucks rolling along dark country lanes in 'UFO'.

The Ufo rising from the lake and taking on several Mobiles in 'Sound of Silence'. That scene still leaves me gob-smacked.
Already mentioned but the VTOL plane from 'Ordeal' did look incredibly realistic, spoilt slightly by the extra definition on the DVD's but I think that many older shows have suffered due to this.

Regards

Most UFO mobile shots do it for me! My favourite is the one (I think in 'Computer Affair') where the mobile comes right up to the camera and stops. Awesome!

The sinking of the St.George (am I right?) at the beginning of the Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only' took my breath away when I saw it at the cinema.

The SHADO mobiles in the woods, some of the SPV snowy scenes in Captain Scarlet, the assembly building scenes in Doppelganger are just a few that come to mind.

From Identified: The SHADAIR SST sitting on the tarmac waiting to taxi on the runway (and some airport equipment seen faintly moving in the background) and later when it's banking smoothly amongst the clouds to avoid detection. Also a scene from Carlin's viewpoint looking to the portside of Sky 1's cockpit window and down into the clouds where the UFO was stalking the SST.

From Exposed: The shot looking out of the XV-104's windows from the pilot's perspective and seeing the cuvature of the Earth in space and the UFO.

I would consider puppetry skills to come under this heading to, so I reckon that during the Stingray episode 'A Christmas To Remember' when Troy, Phones, and Atlanta are performing some ice-skating moves, are some of the best seen - the formations, skates leaving scratches and throwing up ice-spray are superbly done.

Zero X shot at an angle (from front below) when rolling aong the runway.

Elevator cars - the things looked real (until you notice the thin wire pulling them out of the pod...)

SPV bursting the tyres of the DT19

Saloon Car burstng a tyre and going off the road.

The Dove launching into space (without the rocket)

SPV skidding on the ice.

TB2 touching down on the runway in 'Trapped in the Sky'

Mobile being unloaded from the back of the lorry at night (onto the road)

Transmitter Truck being unloaded from TB2 on the icy mountain.

Explosives Truck driving up the side of the hill - and then sliding back down again (Joe 90)

I mean, fair play there's been some pretty good moments!!

I think I need a lie down now.

Another nomination for Thunderbird 2 landing in Trapped in the Sky. I dunno why, but it looks fantastic - probably cos the smoke hides the wires!

The first shot of Thunderbird 1 when Scott boards always looks teriffic.

I do think that Stingray was most consistent effects wise - I think Derek's team always did underwater stuff beautifully.

TB2 launch sequence. Overhead shot of TB1 extending wings. Overhead zoom in to Fireflash in Trapped in the Sky. Overhead shot of Fireflash crossing coast in Operation Crash Dive.

One I was really impressed with when I first saw it and still am. Captain scarlet falling from the Skyview and getting smaller and smaller with cars moving on the ground.
