Default Orac's Key?

Since it's most likely going to be a while before I can build a full-sized Orac (and because I have some spare Acrylic sheet to hand), I thought it might be fun to make the key that activates/deactivates our annoying little chum.

There doesn't seem to be much info out there on the key itself. I'd like to get it right so that it can be used with my Orac replica if/when I actually build one.

Can anyone help me out with dimensions etc?

Hi Guys,

The original Orac Key still exists, but in a bad condition, very broken.
The top and some of the sides are missing...

It measures...
Length 78mm
Width 43mm
Height 19mm
Made from 3mm Perspex

I made replica Orac and Key about 10 years ago, and realised that the dome on the top is not EMA, but a dome from the Revell Gemini kit, grey with hole in the top.

I made about a dozen smaller versions of the key for friends, not much more than fridge magnets really.

(sorry about the blured photo of the original key and bracelet, I dont own it and just did a quick snap).

Hope this helps,
Andy H.

It sure does!
Thanks for the photos and measurements, I'll post build photos...

Thanks for posting this. I have just joined as I found this site while looking for information on building an ORAC replica.

Mine won't be 100% correct, it is for a LARP a friend is organising, but needs to 'look right' and getting the relative the dimensions right is a big help.

Going to be run by the UKLTA, with lasertag as the combat system, 10-12 October near Stoke-on-Trent.

One of the members has already made two lasertag enabled clip gun replicas which are amazing, although I suspect most people will have generic guns as it's a lot of work to make ones specific for the game.

Probably not canon characters, but set in the B7 universe.

We did a short preview game at the weekend and I got to play a Vila-esque character, had a lot of fun.

When the organiser gets a proper website together I can post a link.

sounds like a lot of fun. how much room do you need to put a laser unit into the weapon. I was just thinking about liberator weapons.

I've not built one myself. It's actually IR and works like glorified TV remotes. which sounds daft but the guns can have ranges in the hundreds of meters and be usable like sniper weapons.

Big thing is you need an opaque tube with IR emtter one end and lens the other to focus the beam. A Liberator gun with the transparent rod would probably shoot everyone nearby including yourself unless you worked out some way to fit a full lens assembly that looked decent. An unfocused emitter in a metal tube works OK for very short distances.

The electronics would fit easily in the belt pack.

I'd love to make one for the game, but having agreed to make the ORAC prop may be hard pressed for time to do so.

Right now I'm doing my research for the ORAC build as I've some free weekends in July/August to tackle it.

Like I say it's a game prop not a proper replica so I'm tempted to use some of these for the lighting rather than proper old school incandescent fittings. This is because I have some, it will make the wiring massively easier and I'm used to working with microcontrollers to drive stuff like this.

The plan is also to butcher a PMR walkie talkie and bury it inside discreetly so one of the people running the game can talk through ORAC. I don't trust vox activation for this so will probably make the key a PTT button.

.
People do such amazing things with electronics in props now...there was a huge logan's run game here, and we all got electronic lifeclocks that actually changed color as the game progressed...

I tried to start a new thread about my build but it's awaiting moderation.

Being impatient, I'll post a video of what I got done last night here.

Hi Nick, see you found your way here, Mr W collared you too hmm, I've been lurking for a few days eyeing up the Federation guns, I will be building a Travis pistol, fully Laser tagged up for the game, got a custom circuit board made up already, may well do a couple of the larger troopers guns as well.
The smaller pistol circuit measures 35mm x 20mm x 15mm high and if I manage to fit in the lens unit I'm planing on it should range around 50m
Sorry thread hijack over I shall try to keep on topic from now on...

I just found a perspex box that is exactly the right dimensions of Orac's key (although admittedly, not 3mm thick walled), so I've made a better key for my Orac replica with it.

The reason being,
obviously it would be great to see you,
but if you are planning on bringing anything, Mat needs to know because space is very limited.
