I agree about the production design. We had loads of VERY talented people, it was my priviledge to work with....plus a couple of useless lumps! LOL!

Here's the art depts maquette of the "jockey". Who coined THAT name I don't know. They took a mould off this and gave them away as ppresents to the powers that were.
It was about 12 in long, not incl the chamber setting

My sentiments exactly. If I recall correctly Kubrik did the same thing to all of the 2001 props and miniatures.

The MAIN filming miniatures were saved for theatre exhibition and shipped to the states, and subsequently went to live with Bob Burns.
They still exist so far as I know. I saw some pics a coupla years ago of the big Nosrtomo and it was in a right state, having been "stored" out in the elements. I believe however that a group of modellers have recovered it and are currently restoring it.
The 30in (or so) Narcissus that I worked on was apparently stolen.

I think it's sick the way props get binned at thend of filming a movie or show on tv. How many things have gone forever?...

Exactly. I appreciate that the studio doesn't want it's property to appear in any other production - especially a low budget one which might see cinemas BEFORE the original... but it would be good economics to store minatures/part minatures/props and auction them on once the film has had a release?

That doesn't happen so much anymore with companies like The Propstore Of London
buying up props and costumes off the movie companies and making them generally available to sell to fans
You must remember that from the production company's pov the props have served their purpose and that's it. Storeage is expensive and futile because very little can get re-used

Here's another shot to get this thread moving.
that's bill Pearson posing on set.
The derelict was carved out of foam, coated with resin then covered with plasticene, with various parts and pipes added, then painted. The man mostly responsible was the late Peter Voysey....VERY talented guy.

Here's some more of the big forced perspective narcissus i built. Little did i realise when I was asked to detail the smaller(30in) complete model, I'd be asked to reproduce all the detail in bigger scale!
the photo of me with the drill is me making holes for the corners of the 2 TV monitors used inside to get them into the right position for filming....see outtake frame of final set up.
This model is now in the Bob Burns' collection....see bts docos....wish I could get it back !

Enjoy

My ONLY contribution to AlienS was to supply photos to enable them to re-make a model of the Narcissus. This was built in LA I believe

Yay! I was right when Phil asked in another thread what this:

was, I guessed it was the forced perspective model used for the tv projection shots inside the Narcissus!

Do I get a cookie??

By the way, Phil - outstanding work there fella. The detailing is/was superb.

I've got a quick question Phil on the Narcissus escape sequence. When Ripley gets on board she sits in a chair which is facing towards the front of the ship. You see shots of her looking through the windows as the refinery disappears into the distance and then explodes. If this is the case, that would indicate that the Narcissus is travelling backwards! Are those holes on the front supposed to be engines? You do see them light up for a second, I'd always assumed they were just lights.

The ports that light up on the front are indeed engines....or better perceived as retro thrusters. The ship did indeed escape backwards.....quickest way outta there!
The miniature was filmed against bluescreen for use in the sequence but this was cut. See out-take below.

Thanks Phil. That kind of makes sense actually. If the Nostromo was still travelling forwards before it detonated it would put a greater distance between itself and the Narcissus. You never really get to see which part of the Nostromo (or is it the refinery?) the Narcissus is launched from. Obviously it's underneath one of them.

Is the Nostromo's main body on the left hand side of your pic and one of it's wings on the right hand side? That shot has always bugged me because it's not obvious which part of the Nostromo it's launched from.
