I've made a start on a base:

Routed from18mm MDF, with a decorative edge, and a 6mm MDF platter on top to build the landscape on, it's just under 600mm across, and that's a foot long rule for scale; just sitting on the gas fire, waiting for the second coat of sanding sealer to dry.

Onto the landscape, started with a wall of sheet styrene around the platter, taped in position and sprayed with mould release, then most of a 750ml can of spray polyurethane foam was applied to the base:

When set(ish), I started to remove the excess foam, and carve a Martian landscape:

I found a few interesting 'voids' in the semi-cured foam, one of which became a cave under a ledge, when I was happy with what I had, I added the last of the foam to build up a rockface at the back:

More carving and refining tomorrow, then a coat of plaster, or possibly resin...

Added a crust to the foam:

Partly red dyed papier mache, partly render plaster, just need a day or so to fully dry out, and I can start to add some more sculpted rocks in terracotta air clay.

I've also removed the crust from some of the more interesting 'globs' of foam, and I'm really pleased with how the ledge and cave have turned out- I wanted something akin to Vasquez Rocks, and I got it accidentally!

I have been painting the Martian terrain, and have found something 'living' in the cave under the tank's foot:

Three eerie, glowing eys, or possibly three LEDs in a holder, attached to a battery:

More soon!

Is there more? (what more can there be? (I hope there's more)) May this thread never unravel.

It's one of those threads you wish would go on for ages, great source of inspiration, the Martian in the base was probably having a kit kat.. superb modelling

Martian kit kats have three fingers, and are called Kit Kat Kots

Twix are called Trix, and double deckers have an extra deck. They don't have Snickers, but do, of course, have Mars bars.

XD

Only managed to do a little more, mainly involving removing the 0.05mm styrene from the sides of the terrain (it was too thin, and i used a filler that basically melted it!), and replaceing it with 0.75mm styrene, looks much neater now. I also tried a new colour for the rock:

looks absolutely stunning, it has a Victorian look about it with don't touch me or else, and I see an eagle command module in the garage window with some shoulder pods, maybe a new project on the horizon.

I have to say I really enjoyed the build log to date

I knew there was a reson so many probes get 'lost' on Mars...

Meanwhile, dyed some sand red:

As I couldn't find any one selling any, though I could have tried a petshop...

I couldn't leave those three glowing eyes as they were, so I've sculpted a little Martian:

Here he/she/it is with the eyes aglow:

With the LEDs at full power, without a limiting resistor, it causes the whole cave to glow, allowing a partial sighting of the creature to be made.

Splashed some paint on, including blood on the teeth and tentacles:

Nice bit of splashing, I can only wonder what would happen if you used a brush. You'll be saying you threw the model together next.

Just a quick shot of the critter in it's cave:

and a quick try out of some as yet un-modified British figures, on the outcrop above the cave:

Just need to sculpt some sort of pressure suit/uniform on them, and the other two figures...
