Default Silent Running Models

Take a look at this great little site!...

Quote:
The 26' long miniature was constructed from metal, wood, plastic, 850 Japanese model kits of German tanks, and thousands of custom resin-cast parts. Construction took over eight months and involved over thirty people.

Look around for more.

Firstly, let me say I love Silent Running and the Valley Forge was a great overall design.
However, what let the "miniature" down was the way the kit part detailing was done.....it was all too random looking.

Welcome, lunadude! I've spent the past forty-five minutes enjoying your site and following links that led the the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle. Cool!

I guess I'd chalk it up to young American spacecraft model detailers. This was kinda the first surface detailing since 2001, that I can think of. There was a lot of fun stuff, but it does get funky here and there.

The "random" you mention cannot compare to the models from Spaceballs. That stuff was just all over the place.

Yup, top film, WAY ahead of its time and one who's end makes me blub on every viewing.
Got to say, i don't mind the detailing at all (Galactica to me has far clunkier bits on it) and this shot always raises a smile for the kitbits:

and i love the overall design of the ship. FAR better than the initial take on it:

A buddy of mine has one of the agro-domes sitting on his living room floor where it's waiting to be refurbished. I was surprised to learn the center disc (upon which the plex dome is mounted) was originally cut from plywood.

Although the surface detailing is not nearly as busy as that found on subsequent FX miniatures, it's A LOT better integrated than on many models I've seen.

WOW. Sounds like fun!

Any chance I could post images of the progress, on the Valley Forge site?

Oh, and I'd be happy to share any photo reference.

Just a tiny bit of topic drift... my parents visited the sci-fi museum in Seattle last year, and noticed there were no Eagles in it.

I'd be happy to ask, but don't get your hopes up. The chap who owns the dome is not exactly looking for publicity.

I just discovered this thread as well. Thanks for posting these great resources! Silent Running is one of my all-time favorite films--first one to make me cry in fact (and that doesn't happen often). The Valley Forge is one of the great designs that has influenced many of the models I have built.

Those are coming along very nicely! Your proportions look good. So many other kits have an odd mix of body/leg scales.

I helped master some Drone kits, many years ago. They were released by Posigrade.
