Good stuff everyone. I'm not certain which was 1st. I do recall a late 70's UFO movie shot in the desert that had flying mini orbs. I wish I could remember the title.

Ah, I remember one from the early 1980's where a young man & woman helped aliens escape from a military holding area hidden in an abandoned military base. The aliens looked like bald human children, and close contact with them could result in death if they perceived such contact as threatening. (Unfortunately, this led to the death of a cop who thought he was saving abused children from would-be kidnappers/pedophiles and attacked the woman & man as they tried to hide out from the military.)
The woman was said to be a twin, and had some sort of empathy with the aliens; not quite psychic powers, mind you, but an ability to understand that the aliens simply wanted to go home.
Anyway, at the end of the movie, the couple gets the aliens out of town (L.A.?) and to the desert to await the arrival of the aliens' rescuers: they showed up in a huge, reflective metal sphere.
I'll be darned if I can recalll the title, but I seem to recall that Tangerine Dream did the score.

That film was called 'Wavelength' a great, simple film. John Carpenter lifted the entire end scene from it for 'Starman' but Wavelength did it better- that huge sphere just hanging there off the ground with tiny fighter jets flying around it...

Thank you, Richard, that's the one! Kind of low-budget, but not in a bad way. Had sort of a gritty realism about it, as I recall, and really didn't play out like a big budget Hollywood blockbuster.

What about Legion?

'It's a thermal detonator, just like the one in used by the disguised Princess Leia in "Return of the Jedi". '
