Default Blakes 7 Comet Liberator

I've just found a Comet Liberator with Box and all the bits untouched. Don't think I'll ever get round to making it. Is there a demand for such items? Personally I prefered the Federation ships.

They sell for 50 to 60 on ebay.
It's a very accurate kit - Tony James had the original model in his toilet in Battersea.

I don't think he has it any more.

It was in terrible condition when I saw it, it was covered in brown paint from the last scene it was used and one of the 'arms' was held on with a piece of Dexion racking, the green 'engine' section was a little melted as far as I can remember.

It's still around because I've seen pictures of it.
Matt Irvine was in Comet when the Liberator was there...

Oh god!

Just add insult to injury I've met him a couple of times too...

Here's a photo of the Liberator from comic con in 2004;

She still needs a little restoration, in fact she's got even more pieces missing now than she did in the 80's.

Does anyone fancy making a studio scale kit - I'd kill for one of these!

But the Comet kit, whilst it may be accurate enough, was a real pig to get together properly. The joins between the pods and arms, and the arm to body joins, were flat with no tabs. A real pig to line up properly, and guaranteed to shear off if you coughed! I still have one I can build but need the time to sit down properly and work on seriously strengthening those arms before I do.

Tony has stopped producing these kits some time ago so an untouched one is getting increasingly rare, and I always thought it was a pity that he did not supply an in-scale Scorpio with it. Would really like one of the "Titan Finds" Scorpios if I can afford one before they stop making them!

There would be from me at least.......
I've built both the Comet & Titan Find Liberators so a Studio scale one would be a natural progression.

Did someone say "studio scale"??!!

This is my studio scale replica of the Liberator, about 40 inches long. I used a Comet Miniatures kit as the basis for upscaling as it's "one fifth the size of the real thing". You can see the Comet kit next to it.

... and this is a close-up of the Comet kit, heavily modified to match the large model in every detail - I even re-cast the back piece (the "main drive") in transparent green! I also threw away the decals and a lot of the brasswork, as well as sanding off all the generic "detail" around the rear of the main hull, and replacing it, so that the two ships are models of each other!!

If you want to see how I built 'em (also a model of the London, and other Blake's 7 stuff) have a look on the Horizon website, there are full build diaries there (you will need to become a member before you see them, though). The big Liberator took just over a year to complete (made from EMA tubing and fibreglass mostly), and the small one about three months.

wow that's a great build - I had one some years ago about twice the Comet size but when it broke I gave it to a modeller to fix never to be seen again
Off to the Hoizon site to see how it was done - don't have a year (but do have a three yr old) so I can only admire from afar

Happy New Year All!

I didn't realize this forum was back for updates. With all of this talk of the Comet Liberator kit (I have one in my stash), is there any indication as to how big a Federation patrol ship or the Scorpio would be in relation to the Liberator? Are there drawings of the Scorpio available? (Seems to be there are some pretty good references of the Fed PS on Titan Find's site, but I haven't looked awhile.).

Phil, your Liberator is very impressive! I'd bet it's even more so in person.

Anyone wondered yet, what Sky1's proposed reboot Liberator will look like?

The news about the new Blake's 7 miniseries on Sky One was announced on B7 Media's website in April 2008, but since then ... nothing. No images, no news, no hints, not any wild speculation/rumours!!

Now then, the BBC are very "careful" with information regarding upcoming series of Dr. Who (there's a lot of security to prevent photography and to ensure scripts don't get out into the public domain), but at least they do release SOME news and SOME images of what's happening, to keep the fans happy.

Either B7 Media are keeping everyone who's working on the production under lock and key, or nothing has happened/is happening. I know which one my money's on ... !

Horizon did some very good Scorpio drawings, don't know if they're still available. Having built from them, I'd say they're pretty good, though not perfect. I'm sure I saw the same plans on the Titan Find site, better check. I wish I'd had all those ref photos that they have since unearthed!

As for size, Scorpio's more of a BBC Millennium Falcon. Very small compared to the Liberator... I suspect not much bigger than the London, but others may know better.
