Default Interceptor Pilot

Heard a rumour once that the Interceptor pilot was made from a Tiger Joe tank figure - any truth in this?

Hopefully helpfully,
Barry

How does one know this to be true?

I am looking at a picture in a book of SKY1 with it's cockpit off and the pilot figure does look like the turret figure from the Tiger Joe tank. The photo is credited to Phil Rae whom I believe owns it (correct me if I'm wrong). But is the figure original or been used as part of a restoration. I only say this as I believe he has a large Interceptor that he did a wonderful restoration on as most of the underside had gone including the cockpit. I do not know the history of the SKY1 in his collection and am just wondering if it did come into his hands complete.

So do we have any concrete evidence?

Hopefully helpfully,
Barry

I always assumed the pilot was original as the only work I thought Phil did on the Sky 1 was to detail the rear panel.

Well seeing as they must have had several Tiger Joe tanks it does seem reasonable to assume that perhaps the figures were used to populate cockpits.

I saw the SKY 1 model when Phil had just bought it. There was some detail missing from the rear bulkhead where it joins the Diver section but was otherwise in wholly original condition. The only real sign of age was the clear sticky tape applied to the ailerons, rudder and around the nose which was starting to flake and peel.

So back to the original question - was the Interceptor pilot possibly made from a Tiger Joe figure??

In S.I.G. Magazine No.10 Spring 84 (Colour photo of Fireball XL5 on the cover), there's a feature by Phil Rae who owned original examples of both sizes of the Interceptor models:

"Interior detail was sparse. The astronaut figures were made from Plastercine. Access to the interior was through a removeable panel on the underside."

The same issue has the first publication of Phil's much copied (and generally very good) blueprints of the Eagle in the middle too.
