Default EAGLE reimagined as Star Trek's RUNABOUT

I think that the production designers of STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE 1993-1999 were inspired by the EAGLE TRANSPORTER when designing the Starfleet RUNABOUT Danube Class of DS9 and the sole appearance in the Next Generation episode "Timescape" or the sole appearance of the Starfleet RUNABOUT Yellowstone Class of the Star Trek Voyager episode "Non Sequitur" .

http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Danube_class

The Runabout even had a midship mission module that could be removed(although they never showed on TV series) like a Eagle's module Pods.

I agree. I thought the same thing as I watched Star Trek Deep Space Nine. I always felt that the Star Trek producers were influenced by SPACE:1999. Moreover, Space:1999 had ALPHA MOONBASE with hangars(elevator below) Eagle fleet...they had DS9 with hangars(elevator below) Runabout fleet. Resident Alpha Base officer alien Psychon metamorph Maya was copied by the resident Changeling Odo.

I think we are on to something here. I wonder how many more similiarities that we can find?

Alpha Moonbase became Deep Space Nine space station...

Eagle fleet became Runabout fleet...

Psychon metamorph Maya became Changeling Odo...

Nick Tate even acted in the DS9 episode "Honor Among Thieves".
DS9 episode "Honor Among Thieves", that is Nick Tate threatening Myles O'Brien about Star Trek DS9 copying Space:1999

Its so obvious its a straight rip.

They both even have 'Space' and '9' in the title.

GA should sue.

MUF (Mysterious Unknown Force) of Space:1999 compared to the Prophets of Bajor of Star Trek DS9.

MkIXHawk you are correct!

Also, the SPACE:1999 Launch Pad Boarding Tube connected to EAGLE compared to the Star Trek DS9 DOCKING PORT connected to a Runabout.

Great work Mr Gerard.

The case for the prosecution grows stronger.

As a veteran of the 'Trek' wars, I once wore a home made alphan outfit at a sci fi con pre Star Wars, this is grist for my mill.

Burn Trekkies, burn.

I always thought that the Swift was a direct descendent of the Lunar Module, similar legs, and the Eagle was the evolution of the Swift.

Does any one remember 'morphing' things on the Amiga back in the 80's?

I'd love to see a LM morph into a Swift then an Eagle.

The little triangular windows in the LM are inset like the s1999 craft.

Well, as a staunch fan of S99 over anything Star Trek, I have to admit DS9 was my favorite.

Still, good to know they stole the best parts from S99, just like Lucas did in Star Wars.

And you are forgetting that Alpha and much of the look of S1999 came from 2001! :-)

Yes. It is shown in the 'Stanley Kubrick's Boxes' 2008 documentary that in 1974 he tried to sue to stop the debut of Gerry Anderson ITC that SPACE:1999 was a rip of his '2001:A Space Odyssey'.

Apart from the Eagle / Runabout, I think the other similarities are stretching it.

I mean, travel / docking tubes, shape shifters, spacecraft lifts, circular space stations / bases and MUFs have been stapes of literary SF since the 1940s.
If you look real hard enough, you'll find similar elsewhere also - the 2001 link is obvious, as has been stated.

Besides - personally I wouldn't want to be comparing 1999 to DS9, as it's by far the worst Trek show.

Haha, no idea, but you guys are responsible for my digging out of my unmade ST Runabout kit... I really should be doing more important things like finishing my 44"er...Altares, Metaprobe etc., etc.

I agree that there are things about science-fiction that have always been.

However, 'Forbidden Planet' 1956 movie has to be a major catalyst in the creation of both 'STAR TREK' and 'LOST IN SPACE'(flying saucer earth ship, robot, et.al.).

Space:1999 episode "Bringers Of Wonder" was absolutely copied in the Buck Rogers In The 25th Century 1979-81 episode "Mark of the Saurian" http://buckrogers.org/episode.cfm?episode=30

I am just saying, If you place the collection of the specific content of SPACE:1999 side by side with collection of the content of STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE, then it is as if the DS9 producers said let's borrow the set of proven ingredients that exist in Space:1999 content. Too many content elements are replicated.
