Default framework

When looking for Brass Tubing, for the 44" model, dont forget to check out B&Q. it has got a good stock of brass parts including tubing it has only 2.0mm, 4.0mm and 6.0mm thin wall stuff (0.5mm) but it can be used for lots of framework sections, apart ftom the spine and main cage (jig rails) this saving LOADS of cash in your build up!! perhaps its just me being Scottish but every little helps

Default B&Q honest

Yip, B&Q. the 6mm x 0.5mm is £3.98 per Meter. i just got 10 meters of the stuff but will have to go to Smiths metals for the other 8m of the thick wall tube for important parts.

I intend to build the 44" version. i know that the dimentions of the metal are not exactly correct, they should be 3/16" = 4.78mm , 1/4" = 6.35mm and 5/16" = 7.93mm. however, i will have to use the 4mm (or find some 5mm) ,6mm and 8mm Brass simply because to buy it from "smiths metals" would cost a fortune at over £10 per meter this would put the total cost of this model way out of my reach. so for my first scratch build i gota do what i gota do.

That's definitely wrong. I bought ninety feet of tube for under £55. Remember it's sold by weight at Smith's. They must be quoting you for rod but even then that's wrong.

Maidstone Engineering Services can supply 1/4" brass rod for under £1 a foot and they're slightly more expensive than Smith's.

Click on "Materials" and scroll not quite half way down.

You might find the correct imperial size is a lot cheaper.

Phoned Smiths today and got new prices for Imperial size tubes........ 1/4" is half the price of the 6mm. so it is looking better already.

That sounds better. They don't stock really weird sizes (and metric is still weird to Smiths despite their catalogue) so they probably have to order in a certain quantity. From memory all their metal comes in to them in 20 ft lengths or so. They'll cut stuff down into manageable lengths for getting into a car, free of charge but don't go mad or they will charge you for cutting.

Do Smith's do the correct sizes for an 11" Eagle?

You're only talking about a few feet of brass for an 11" model so you might just as well use K&S. It would cost you more to drive to one of Smith's branches than anything you were likely to save.

I found the brass tube and other metal sections in Slough B&Q this week. It's a broad range of (expensive) stock which they carry which is good but they're all metric sizes which for an imperial Eagle, isn't.
