You make an interesting point, in fact a company was indeed formed to do exactly that, and moulds were indeed taken, but I have not heared of the two entreprenures involved since; and apparently the company didn't take off.

Hi Chaps,
Moulding the body is the only option at this stage, the owner is not interested in selling the car, certainly not to a fan group that don't have any funds, be realistic, would you hand it over just because someone wanted you to or tried to sway you with "the greater good" argument. We may not like it but that is the situation. Righteous indignation will lead to bad feeling, the owner has done nothing wrong and really doesn't deserve anger in his direction just because you feel it's justified. If you try to drag the chap into a situation where answers or action are demanded and make him feel uncomfortable you will in all likelihood have the door closed on you and anyone else who would follow you. Having said all this, never say die. There is always the possibility that someone who is passionate and committed to rescuing this car and has the means to do it will come along .... Please don't blow their chance of success. Conservation needs to be done with care and sympathy to the subject and owner. |

Mmm Conservation, care and sympathy?, well that hasn't really achieved much with these two Iconic cars over the last 44 years or so has it?.

Neither will demanding, anger and hostility towards the owners. Don't overlook the fact that these cars have survived at all. So much didn't make it this far.

I know the costs to rebuild or totally remake a car, and at times the amounts are very similar.
If you guys are that pasonate, just get it together and build two clones. Leave the current owners alone and move on. I knew of the moulds that were taken all those years ago and the intensions of those who made them to produce copies. But I have found no photos or information on what ever happend with them apart from a mention of the production of one body. |

I understood that the cars were originally created with the idea of limited kit car production, does seem a logical way to go forward. I wonder if anybody is alive who worked on the project and just what else ie plans survive.
As for the owner, far better to keep communication open, they may even be reading this post. Wouldnt it be nice if there are no immediate plans for the car, for it to go on display, on loan, in a nice dry heated car museum? Im certain it would get a lot of attention! |

Hard to say as I haven't seen it. He said it was a prototype for a kit car of that never went into production. Will probably remain a mystery.

Thank You Joe. Team effort and all that, I could not have done this alone. As strange as this may sound, even if I am lucky enough to be invited to take photographs for you all, I suspect there will be a part of me that will find it quite difficult; its clearly not the same car we all knew, and another part of my Psyche just wants to take her under my arm and restore her for you all, in itself a daunting but worthy project. I promise to keep you all up dated.

i too have mixed emotions.
i presume we are talking about "die hard ufo fan" tony read who also owns strakers replica, Quest. has anyone got any pics of Quest, as i've never seen it. what happened to the third doppelganger car. (sure i remember reading somewhere that it was just a static prop. had no engine or running gear). as for restoration, well FAB1 was a total wreck when that was found, but was reformed by mellor coachcraft of rochdale. anythings possible. |

Its great to read that possibly one? Quest body from the mould s has survived.
And its interesting reading that there are people out there who would like to own and restore the original cars or have a replica. But no one has mentioned how bad as in an amount money they are willing to invest for the privalage. Talk is cheap, but reality is making a commitment in time and money to have something. I am interested to hear what people out there think a restoration on one of the original cars would cost. And what would have to be invested by someone else to bring a kit based package to reality For almost 40 years I have been involved in all aspects of the automotive industry, from general repairs to classic restorations. Design and developement of one off and pre production vehicles. So I have a good idea of what the Dollars required should be in my part of the world. I would like to see if others are as well in touch with what needs to be spent . Last edited by Cruzin; 15-01-2012 at 04:54 AM. |
