Thanks for posting.

Interesting article - although, personally, I am glad that Stargate Universe got cancelled.

Unlike Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe was devoid of any humour and devoid of a sense of team spirit - and the constant bickering between Young and Rush was not a good example to the rest of the crew and was just plain annoying...

Rant over...

I agree with the author's conclusion that it is time for SPACE:1999 to be rebooted , albeit not with the comment that Keith Wilson's sets look 'cheesy' today.

Great article.......thanks for posting

The author is very accurate about the "escape" factor.

There is so much out there waiting to be seen, explored, discovered.

Good Sci-Fi is a great way to expand your mind

I quite liked Stargate Universe. The use of the stones was a bit of a cheat though and spoiled what could have been a better written series. It reminded me of what NBC insisted on when commissioning Star Trek, less ship and more planets.

Please...no more "reboots"! Let's pick up after "Message from Moonbase Alpha". It's the only way to go. It needs to have the same basic feel as the old show (Year One) and not become another of these "realistic" (Bad, shaky camera work, everyone hates each other, Every story gloom and doom...etc.) shows everyone focuses on now. i know tht means looking a bit "retro", but who cares! Bring it on, Space:2099 guys!

And no Eagle "redesigns". It's a classic! Now following the MFMA story, the Eagles could have been upgraded slightly, and after the base is re-manned, a new craft should be built...they've had some 30 years to think about it, and it could fly with the Eagles, but not instead of.

Unfortunately I can't imagine anybody greenlighting a new Space:1999 unless it was a total reboot. They certainly couldn't count on any of the original cast to return other than maybe a cameo, and the sets, while I personally think still look amazing, would probably not be considered contemporary today. So if they ever bring 1999 back I'm almost certain it would start from scratch. The problem is that S:1999 was a lavish production that was very expensive. I can't imagine a show being made like that today, even with good cgi, because it would be an expensive production and networks in general hate expensive productions these days. All the most expensive shows are often the ones to get canceled first.

I'd hate to see the Eagle get redesigned. Does anybody remember those amazing "Eagle 2" posters done years ago that featured a fully-updated Eagle with loads and loads of incredible new details? That's how it should be done. Keep the design virtually identical but with more intricate detailing, working landing gear, etc.

It is certainly a shame there aren't any true "deep space" series on tv any more. I was hopeful for the pilot episode of virtuality but sadly it wasn't even given a chance.

Thumbs up Not reboot...

Hi Gwent...

Yes, it will be difficult to get hold of old cast and crew..

Instead it should be made with new cast and crew, keep the Eagles (it´s a trade mark) and then use the old cast as ref. in some flashbacks or something like that...

But most important keep the original Space 1999 spirit and humor...

I agree with Space 1899 about Stargate: Universe....I was/am a big fan of SG: SG1 and SG: Atlantis and I tried to watch SG: Universe (3 episodes worth) and found the characters to be so whiny, belligerent and just plain unlikeable that I couldn't continue to watch it.

...And while I sort of agree with the article's author about Space: 1999's 70s fashions looking cheesy (I think they just date the show, rather than actually being "cheesy"), I disagree about the sets looking cheesy. The sets were fantastic, even to this day...Especially Main Mission.

I think Wolfspace has a good concept in mind. Besides, Trek has had fan films of pretty high quality for about 10 years now, so why not Space:1999. There are some very talented people out there (and Tim Smith showed SORT OF what was possible, even if it was done with a comedy slant). The only limiting factor is money.

Let me say that we (www.retconstudios.com) are looking at all the option possible at the moment. I can also say that for an official film/movie/series production, money isn't a problem as Granada/ITV (the owner of Space 1999) are sitting on cash reserves of around GBP £1bn. Its almost 1.6 Billion of US dollars. But as you said....are they willing to take a chance....only the future will tell.

As for ''What is the world coming too...'' I won't start writing about this, as I would have too much to say.
