Default 'Space: 2099 (1999)' to Be Revived for Television!

Quote:
ITV Studios America and HDFILMS announced plans for a reimagining of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's famed franchise of the 1970s, then called Space: 1999. The news comes months after Fox and producer Seth MacFarlane announced they would be reviving Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, a 1980s miniseries from Carl Sagan.

"Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways," said HDFilms president Jace Hall, who will spearhead the effort and serve as an executive producer. The project is in the development phase and has yet to be shopped to networks.

"While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today’s audiences," continued Hall, who recently revived V at ABC, "I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by the original Space: 1999 television show represent an exciting platform to explore possibilities.”

Added ITV Studios International's managing director Paul Buccieri: “After more than 35 years, we are thrilled to be developing a new vision of our much beloved franchise for audiences worldwide. Historically, the Space: 1999 brand has entertained and fascinated millions of people."

'V', huh? That really wasn't as good as it could have been, was it? (Putting it kindly).

Two questions: Where does this fit in with Eric's '2099' project and... is that the 'Kestrel' in that pic, with those oddly bulging eyes?

I'm hoping for more of a 'season one of the new BSG' feel if anything, maybe reflecting the 1999 novel 'Earthfall' but... maybe I should wait and hear more before I sigh too much.

Just an observation, but it looks like they are going with a spaceship (named Asimov!) and not Moon base Alpha!

Doesn't that make it just a generic lost in space show?

Wasn't it the fact that the image of our moon floating through space was what made the original unique?

I don't believe for one minute this poster and the designs shown are representative of the final designs - I mean, the 'Asimov' is basically a 'Sulaco' design, with a pipe sticking out of its flank, turning a right angle and entering what looks like a jet engine.
'Eagle 01' is certainly cobbled together, with a (what it reminds me of, anyway) Star Wars Stormtrooper bubble lens laid over the window and anti glare panels.
It does, to a degree, resemble the Kestrel - more here:

I can only agree there, Retroboy. We still can hope that they come up with something better when the show really will be produced. I still have my doubts there. We just have been teased by a not made UFO movie...

Please use Series 1 as the model. This could be great if done right.

I would like to offer three changes:

Instead of exploding atomic waste dumps throwing the Moon out of earth orbit, substitute a massive Hadron-type supercollider project on the dark side of the moon. It could be storied as a new ultimate power source that when tested, opens a type of "wormhole" that sucks the moon into deep space.

No shape-shifting Maya, also, no bell-bottom pants.

Greg

Call me a purist if you want,
but i don't like what i see at this moment.

The only references we have so far
with the original series, are :

- The word 'Space' in the title

- The Eagle command module, which is ruined to my eyes.

Don't tell me it could be a derived vehicule based on the eagle,
because they already wrote 'Eagle 1' on it.

I hope, god, i hope they won't do a cheap remake
from a good franchise, only to make money.

I have a strange and a very bad feeling about this ...

Whether or not they change the Eagle ( a sad and foolish venture I'd say ) what's with the addition of extremely heavy military weaponry?
Just by the virtue of this detail and despite what they might say in their FAQ, if this is an indication of the direction they are going, then they've already completely missed the point.
Next thing you know they'll redo Thunderbirds as a militaristic search and destroy show.
