Default Space 2099 ETF Interview Opportunity - PLEASE READ

Hi Guys,

I know the recent announcement of the new Space 2099 tv series has caught everyone's attention, so I have gone direct to the studios and arranged for an ETF members interview with the President and executive Producer of HDFilms.

So please post your questions in this thread, myself and Bernie will then go through and pick the best ones to send over for HDFilms to answer where possible (obviously there bound to be things they cant reveal right now)

Exciting times

Chris

I'm just a little bit affraid after seeing

Thanks !

Will the new show be a sequel, or a reboot of the original story? Will any of the original cast members be involved? Will Gerry Anderson be involved?
Will any of the original Tech designers be involved?

Ham Salad, if you go to their own FAQ most of your questions are already answered there.

My question:
The intent of the original show seemed to be thrusting artists, technicians, scientists and the everyman into areas of cosmic suspense and see how they deal with it. All of the pre-pre-production art for 2099 seems to have a lot of very large guns. Will this show deal with antagonists with wit and intelligence, or with brute force?

Thumbs up

Are you gonna use the original spirit/atmosphere/eagle“s/Alpha of Space 1999 (Season 1 with a twist from Season 2) ?

And are you gonna use / keep the original opening and music from Space 1999 ?

The reason for this is there are many Space 1999 fans out there in the world, more then they really know and they will be very alert on the outcome...

Default How about time travel in the feature film?

O.K.,
Heard that Space:1999 is going to be remade into SPACE:2099. Fine.
If your going to remake the whole dammed thing, get some of the original actors, say Zenia Merton and Nick Tate, come to Earth out of the blue in an Eagle, via timewarp, captured by todays Military forces etc and interrogated.

Have them tell the story, about what happened in 1999.

How they got there etc. I'm sure you can at least do that.

They (homeland security?) will believe it because they have an actual eagle.

Obviously, the start of the movie could kick off there with an altered the timeline -just further ahead.

And please don't change anything from the show too much in design -keep that keyed in "locked in look" Keith Wilson was so noted for!

Have more to say to me? NAAA you probably won't contact me at!: inertia809@yahoo.com my name is ADAM F 11:48 a.m. saturday 2/11/2012

Would the first season be 26 episodes or 13 episodes? Would the stories be inspired by the first season or second or ( even? ) a hybrid of both seasons consisting of thoughtful episodes alongside more action oriented episodes? What are their plans for sales of the series through distribution/syndication?

I wouldn't like to see the Eagle altered too much & the possible move from Moonbase to the Asimov ship is a concern.
I would like to know if Jace has anyone in mind for scoring the series, Barry Gray's music is going to be hard to top, it needs to be grand and create a sense of awe. I must admit to liking Richard Gibbs & more latterly Bear McCreary's treatment of the BSG score and the fact that they did, on occasion, air the Colonial Anthem from the original series. i know that McCreary would be a controversial choice because of the way that the BSG reboot polarized opinion. Anyhoo I'll leave it at that for now.

Why do a continued story when that only takes away from creativity in writing? Tell HDfilms we want episodes!!

Default Space 2099?

Can we please have intelligent scripts with good Scientific advisers like
Brian Cox.

Decent Actors,
British Leads would be nice for a change.

No Metamorph Characters Please!
"We all Loved Maya"
But No Transformations!!

Practical & Subtle Uniforms Please Not garish Clown Costumes of Year 2

Please Don't take the Eagles too far away from the original conceptual design, We could have new craft being developed in future seasons as needed.

Just on this question, Jace has come out and confirmed that apart from the 2 Space 2099 branded images released via Hdfilms alongside the announcement, all other 'art' is unrelated

Ah, I see...but most of this they essentially reused to say, or were totally vague. The one thing they admit is that Gerry won't be involved.

This bodes not well: shades of V and Galactica: it's a bad sign when they do a remake of somebody's great idea and then think the project is too god for the creator of that idea.

Ok guys Ive pulled together 15 or so questions which i will tidy up and then send over to Jace.

Like i said before he may not be able to answer one or more of the questions at this early time, but we will definitely keep in touch with him so fear not if you question isnt answered this time around.

From what little i have seen i am dubious, and more than a little bit, especially because so little is being said and the method used to design the show. Making a sci-fi show that wants to take on the mantle of something that had so much influence on its fans as Space 1999 at the time when it came out cannot be done as a "lets try to please everyone but we will give you something that is different'. Obviously each fan will have a somewhat different opinion on what a new series on Space 1999 will be, so no one will be pleased in the end, or few.

What a series like that needs is a Strong Vision, both creative in terms of designs (it is a very tall order to try to top what was done for Space 1999 in terms of design, even looking back more than 30 years ago). And 2nd, it needs a strong creative vision (for the writing, filming, editing and soundtrack).

When i look at the early posters showing what an Eagle would look like, i see that as a mistake. You cannot make an Eagle by simple adding a (somewhat modified) Eagle nose cone on something that tries to look like the Millenium Falcon, complete with greeblies and all.

Lets take a look at this from a technological point of view. In 1999, the technology and funds necessary to build a spacecraft as advanced and as large as the Eagle simply didn't existed yet. Actually, you can take the same vehicle, and put it in the year 2099 and then it would REALLY be factual in terms of what is feasable for that year. First, in infrastructure to build and put in orbit a vehicle of that type and send it to the Moon (or build it locally, which is even more difficult (and was totally impossible in 1999: there are no large scale metallurgical and composite fabrication factories on the Moon, no mining operation, no foundries to make steel and titanium and aluminum and so on). In 2099 there might be, we are talking 87 years from now. The engine technology for the Eagles was nuclear. The Vasmir engine is still experimental and have not yet been tested in space. They would need a much more large and much more powerfull version of it to propel something the size of an Eagle. By the time of 2099 we may have mastered that technology and made those engines safe and able to operate for a long time under normal operational situations. The Eagle of 2099 does not have to look 'science-fictionny' like something out of Star Wars or BattleStar Galactika. The very same vehicle with very little changes can be used. In fact, the Eagle design was too much in advance for the year 1999. A hundred year in advance in fact.

Take a look at conceptual drawings from Frassanito for what crude version of an 'Eagle' might look like in say 25-30 years from now. It does have a nose cone (like the Eagle) where the pilots are located (it also serves as a reentry capsule), the main body contained the fuel tanks (uncovered except for some heat reflective metal and textile material). It had 3 landing gear pads (unlike the 4 of the Eagle, but still making it look similar in concept), and had a large engine at the rear, similar to the Eagle concept. That's something that could be brought to the Moon and operate from there in a few decades, if a project somewhat more ambitious than Constellation was devised.

So in fact, in terms of engineering and available technology, the very same design for the Eagle design could be used for a new series taking place in 2099, with very little changes.

I can say that unless we have a Major breakthrough in physics between now and 2099, the propulsion system of the Eagle would pretty much be the same as the one shown in the original series, or based on a well developed Vasmir engine (again, not much different).

Don't try to put things like Warp drives and so on, we are still hundreds of years away from that (if ever). Read about the Alcubierre engine. The energy to do that are impossible, you'd have to absorb the whole universe in front of the ship and expand it at the rear out the engine for it to work (meaning, destroy the universe in the process). Theoretical physics anyway, but that't the closest to what a real warp drive would be. There are lots of more exotic solutions involving parallel universes and mini-blackholes and so on, but none of them proved by any physics, they are only 'what-ifs'. Nuclear propulsion is pretty much the way to go for 2099.

I myself have designed a few updated versions of the Eagle just a few recent years ago, one of which is a Heavy Industrial Eagle used for the mining of Helium-3 on the surface of the Moon. The basic shape was the same (beak, removable pod, 4 landing gear pods, central frame and main engines, but heavier, with a different shape and details, bigger everything in fact, and with 1 or 2 more main engine bells and with different additional equipment for the mining task).

Now it does not mean that you could not make a 2nd or a 3rd version of the Eagle in that show Keep the base design, and add a couple other ones, each with a different function, or like 'block' versions of the same design showing evolution along the same series of vehicles, several different blocks of the same vehicle operating side by side, like what happens with fighter jets and cars.

So you would have the Real original Eagle in the new show (say 95% the same design), alongside with a couple new, or updated versions of the same vehicle designed for different tasks. Like that it will keep most of the fans happy (including me).

Stephane.

I'm also dubious, but I'll wait and see.

In the meantime, will Maya be in it?
