Default Original B7 Season 1-3 Federation Guard Costumes

Hi Guys,

In the late 90's I was working on a programme and was asked to do “some digging around” in the BBC Costume & Wig Store (long gone now).
So I took the opportunity to do “some digging around” for myself...

I found 4 original Fed guard costumes, a pair of original Derry boots, 3 original bandana belts and Paul Darrow's (Avon) boots from season 4 of the show...
Normally they never sold anything, but I thought I'd ask...
(At that time the BBC were going through some restructuring)

And they said YES !!!!

So I got them, one of the guard costumes and the Avon boots have now gone, but still got all the rest...

On the guard costumes the maker says Eurostyle on the label.
One still had the name Steven Pacey in it (although it has now faded as it was written in biro, which doesn't last)
The Fed logo had been quite crudely cut off and still shows pieces of it there.
They all have a BBC code mark in them, ie FUT300, FUT in BBC terms means Future costume.

So to clear up a few rumours I'm going to put up some photos of them.

I've thrown in a Mutiod too, which has a different makers name of Phil Read

Hope you enjoy,

Andy.

Thanks for these, they will come in very useful, another project I intend to work on. I've got the motorbike suit (looks the same, but doesn't have a label inside at all) but the shots of the belts are extremely handy as are the badges!

Brilliant stuff!

Fantastic photos and info Andy, cheers for sharing.

So, not Belstaffs then? ...........interesting.

The logo patches, were they stitched onto the breast pocket, as well as being glued?

It looks like that is the case on one of your photo's, or is that just the remnants of the original logo patch that was removed.

Now get these on mannequins, put some helmets on them and show them off in all their glory.

Love the Mutoid as well.

So do I: for some reason, I remembered the costume as being more elaborate than that.

It does make me wonder what those mutoid 'chef's hats' were made of....

Hi Andy,

Well as regards Bellstaffs, I really don't know...
I'm going on the original ones I have...
That's not to say that they didn't use Bellstaffs for others...
Can I ask where did the idea of Bellstaffs come from ?
Unless Eurostyle is a version of Bellstaff !!!

As regards the logos...
As far as I can see, it was toupae tape (for wigs) used, that was very commonly used by Make Up, Costume and Vis Effects.
Then stiched afterwards I suppose.
You can see remnents of it on the flaps of the bandanders too.

I've got an original Mutiod headress too, but a bit at a time yeah...

Me, personally, always thought the Federation Guards were Belstaff coveralls, not sure how or why I thought that, maybe season four were Belstaffs and people assumed that all Federation Troop uniforms were?

That would make sense to stitch the patches, a bit embarrassing if they kept falling off.

Superb pictures there - the temptation to elaborate repro's of the originals is almost irrepressable - has anyone else noticed that the Fed officers who carried pistols had to tuck them into their belts as the beeb didnt supply holsters ( as in when Durkin enters servelans office in "star one" one guard has the standard blaster and the other whips a pistol out of his belt). Ahh the problems of little or no budget.

I also noticed they had a a triangular piece they put on officers/ non coms from time to time to distinguish them.

I'd really like to do a full on trooper, but the correct coverall on ebay won't sell out of the UK...now how do they expect one to create an army, anyhow?

An accurate mask would be wonderful of course: no matter how much work you put into a repro, there's that niggling bit of doubt as to how close you got. I built a helmet and mask in 1987 with practically no reference at all...it's really, really too big!

The triangle for the officers appears to be supported by straps as apposed to being part of the suit. You can see this clearly on Space Major Provine when he attempts to make his escape in "Countdown". His Federation logo is also silver.

At least one of those triangles was auctioned at the big BBC costume auction at Acton in the early 90's, it was in a big tea chest full of cloth scraps, I saw it at the viewing, no idea who bought the box of scraps (or even if it was still in the box by the time of the auction).

Thank you for posting up the photos Andy, it is so good to have such reference material when making a costume!

I have just a few questions, mostly about the belt. What is the width of the main belt (A), the shoulder strap (B), and the small loops that go through the D-rings (C)? I presume that the width of the belt and shoulder strap is 2", but would love it confirmed. Thank you.

Also, someone else also asked what the dimensions of the vinyl logo patches were, and also if the logo was printed onto the vinyl. I would dearly love to know that too.

Smiles, Izzy

Yes..? I am all ears. I am always interested in a project.
However, might take just a little bit of time before I will have it finished. Can't find Derri boots and have put my name on the new order when next they make some. Currently I seems to find size UK3 all the time!!

Hi Izzy,

Im away for about a week or so, but when Im back I'll get the info you want...
The badges were screen printed onto shiney black vinyl.
Is there anything else you need to know ?

Andy H.

PS
Here's an image of three original badges, just print it out on nice glossy photo paper and you should be alright...
