Default UFO Japanese Blu-Ray

UFO is being released on a Blu-Ray Collectors set in high definition in Japan on December 5.
There was a german Blu-Ray recently but that was in Standard definition

- Restored from 35mm negatives.
- In original 4:3 Aspect Ratio
- Booklet
- Extras
- Deleted Scenes

Unfortunately it will be 200

BUT.. It does mean that the hard work of grading, digitizing etc. has been done, and, like any company, they will seek to offset costs by selling the package to Network and whoever else wants to offer the package.

Which means a bluray issue won't be so far away for the rest of us.

Or you could get the Japanese version as they're region 2, same as UK (presumably English language will be an option on the disk)

Blu-ray regions are not the same as DVD regions. Japanese Blu-rays are "Region A", same as the USA, and different than the UK.

And yes, the advertising says that there will indeed be an English mono track, and an English 5.1 track.

And Blu-ray regions are not easy to crack, as the regioning is done in hardware, instead of software. This is why bluray players can be cracked to play region 1 DVDs, but not region A blurays.

The one on the manufacturer's website:

http://www.geneonuniversal.jp/movie/sp/ufotb/

Or, if you don't want to translate that into English, here's my English interpretation of what's being released:

It occurs to me that it could mean the original Japanese mono... Doesn't make it clear.

Can someone who can read the page confirm more facts? There is an English only option for sound without subtitles? $450US and then shipping is crazy expensive but half of what we
paid for the whole series on Laserdisc 20 years ago! Does anyone know if A&E will release these in norh America? Thanks, K

Sorry, just saw Marc's page for most of my questions! Looks great, but will have to think twice of there's going to be US releases. Packaging sure looks great, thought! I still have those Laserdisce, but haven't had a player hooked up for years!

I guess it's possible that the Japanese subtitles are "forced" to be on when listening to the English tracks, but I don't think that's the general/common practice?

I guess we can only say for sure when it's released.

On various websites I've seen, I thought it was pretty clear that there was both a Japanese mono track and an English mono track (unless that's a fabrication from Google Translate?)

On Amazon.co.jp, UFO is *only* US$340 including shipping to the USA. :-)

A&E still has USA release rights, but are not planning to release this in the near future.

I'm still wondering who paid for the new 4:3 HD masters for UFO and Thunderbirds... Geneon Universal? ITV? Or a joint ITV/A&E/Geneon Universal deal...

Well, the subtitles being optional is pretty key to any purchase by me. Also, all of the bonus material, the documentaries, etc., would have to be caption free, too. Does a page exist for the Thunderbirds set, too? K

Well, I can let people know after I receive mine. Even if the subtitles are NOT optional, I'm certain that they'd be removable with a PC with a Blu-ray drive (either by saving them to a file for playback on a media player, or by burning them back to a BD-R). Subtitles and audio tracks are all stored as separate "streams", which can be removed as desired.

My guess is that 99% of the bonus material are exactly the same as what was released on the Japanese UFO DVDs. So I'm not expecting any of that to be HD. Or even good "DVD quality".

As for the Thunderbirds Blu-ray, that Japanese manufacturer's page can be translated with Google Translate. Don't know if someone has created an English version.

I just checked my Japanese UFO DVDs, as the Japanese UFO Blu-ray discs may simply just use exactly what was on these.

"SHADO Secret File" is a 25 min program that originated from the Japanese laserdiscs. This is a Japanese-language documentary, and there are no subtitles (English or Japanese).

"The UFO Documentary" is a 52 min program that originated from the Fanderson fan club. The version they used is the original version that was released on VHS tape, not the current DVD version. This is an English-language documentary, with the subtitles "burned into" the image (i.e., they cannot be disabled).

Sorry. I re-read it again. It does say the original mono English track.

英語音声は5.1chサラウンドに加え、オリジナルのモノラルも収録!

And I imagine the subtitles are optional. The DVDs include at least three subtitle options: Off, On, and only for undubbed sections.
