Default Is this Blake's 7 trooper helmet original?

I'd like to ask the help of all and sundry to try to authenticate the 'original , screen used' trooper helmet I have just received...especially Phil and andy, if it pleases.

****

Description:

First, important points: Finish is flat black. The outer 'rain' textured acrylic ring is cracked at the screws which hold the rings together....this is consistent with acrylic that old ( it tends to get brittle after 20 years or so) . The screws at the sides and back holding the rings together are brass and about 1/4" in diameter, standard head. The inner green ring actually touches the helmet shell at the front and back, bit is spaced out about 1/2" on the sides. They use what appears to be acrylic tubing as spacers, both between the rings themselves and between the helmet. The clear eyes plate isn't green, it's a smoke/very subtle reddish shade. May have been originally smoke color and aged to this...

One thing that is very odd, is that behind the badge on the front is a large piece of black felted material. The paint job on the badge is consitant with Photos on this site: black with silver spatter.

The faceplate appears to held on with 3 of 1/4" aircraft 'pop' rivets, with backing washers. The outer 'rain' patterned ring appears to be made in 3 pieces, with seams at the back, and an overlap pies at the front that holds the badge. The rain pattern material is quite thick, about 3/16" / 5mm.

It comes with two authenticating letters: one from;Craig wesson (?) (handwriting) of 'BBC resources to 'John Allen' headed 'Blake's 7 helmet' dated march 8 1996. , stating the helmet in question came from the beeb and went to the sunday telegraph for a charity auction. The other letter is from the sunday telegraph itself, listing '1 x BBC TV Blake 7 (sic) space helmet prop. Both letters are on watermarked letterhead, the beeb one with color letter head press.

Photos to follow.

Well, I sent some to phil, he thinks it's fake...haven't heard from andy or Bernie about it.

Phil says he thinks the helmet part is too new inside, he's seen replicas that look like that.

Since the authentication letter from the charity auction is dated 1993, I think it might have been built by the BBC FOR the auction...I'd be surprised if they still had stuff from the show hanging around that long.

I'd still be very interested in it, if it is cast from an original. I know a few people who would be interested in getting copies from it. Might be a way to recoup some costs.

I sent photos to burnie to post...I guess there was some problem for him. If you'd care to leave by PM your e-mail I'll Forward them to you. Sorry I can't post them here myself, as I have no outside photo account.

Do you know if the BBC made any helmets just to auction off?

Phil said the mask looks right as far as being original or derived from same, the photos I sent included some measurements.

OK, I thought you didn't want to bother with me because you haven't replied to PM's or emails lately....

I don't know what picasa is. Photobucket requires all sorts of personal info and complicated registration, I gave up on it a long time ago. Also, I've had some bad experience with people using my internet profile to harass me, so I try to keep it as small as possible. I have so few photos I want to post, it's not really justified anyhow.

example: I had some prop photos on a site, and the mods on that site tried to use the registration info I gave them to dig up private information they could make public in an effort to harass me. Luckily, by the time they tried it the info was largely out of date, but the fact that they tried it at all was quite shocking.

I'm not an expert, but I can't see anything wrong with it?

'Newness' of parts could be down replication OR refurbishment, things do get fixed along the way.

I agree, this thing looks pretty solid, I think it's credible that it survived in decent nick. Why not contact one of the letter writers? Nice helmet regardless, still waiting for one of the big guns to speak though...

Hi Ham,
Well after seeing the photos...
Im petty sure it's one off the originals that I refurbed in the early 90's.
Im sure I had to replace the rings and do a general clean up and repaint.
The clear visor is definately original as I recognise the red glue marks, some of the visors were brown smoked and others were black smoked Perspex.
Is the outer clear ring 5mm thick ?

Hope this helps,
Andy H

Ham use http://tinypic.com/ No information is asked of you, no registration simply upload and get a link to post on the forum. The link to post on the forum is the link that includes [IMG] at the start and end. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you very much, I feel better as it was really too expensive. I thought I might have been hosed as well.

Yes, the outer ring is 5mm, quite thick really.

Do you know any source for the base helmet?

So that felt backing is common? It seemed odd to me.
