Default Desk Tidy Of The Gods

Hello!

I'm back with another little replica item, this time from "Dawn Of The Gods". You know the story - the Liberator is sucked into an artificial black hole created by The Thaarn, a supposedly mythical being from Auron. The crew are stranded on Crandor, the planet at the heart of the black hole, captured by The Thaarn's Caliph, and Avon and Tarrant are put to work manually solving dynamic flux equations with pencil and paper, as The Thaarn will allow no technology but his own.

When Tarrant and Avon realise that they will be using pencil and paper rather than computers to solve the many dynamic flux equations that are required, Tarrant says "I've never seen these things outside museums."

This is a very pencil-centric episode, so here's my own little tribute to those pivotal "graphite writing sticks".

I got this blue desk tidy off eBay:

It's a pretty good match to the one on the desk in the above images. I also got these natural finish pencils off eBay:

One thing you'll notice is that the pencils I bought have erasers on their ends, so to make them more accurate, out I went to the workshop and I sawed them off with my fine Zona saw:

So, having given the sawn ends light sanding, the last stage of this incredibly easy replica was to place the pencils IN the desk tidy:

There - job done!!

One more thing - the eBay seller can also foil-print up to 20 characters on the pencils, so what else could I have printed on them but ...

Those of you who know me know that whenever I build replicas, I inevitably end up extensively researching the subject, and even this little project was the same. Although I could get eraser-less pencils from various online suppliers, they all had very large minimum order quantities, and I'd never get through 1200 or so HB pencils in a lifetime ... 10 was enough!!

One "interesting" site I did find is called Pencil Talk, a very informative resource that discusses and reviews pencils and pencil-related subjects. It's worth a look - I never knew pencils could be so fascinating.

I'll be back with another replica soon!
