I'm toying with having one of Jim Small's Meta's myself too. It would be interesting to compare notes.

Go on mate...if you can built the 23" Eagle kit, this is very easy...just a little fragile and fiddly here and there.

The build is simplicity itself...spraying up in Ford Diamond White is simple, it's just the raiding of the decal stock and painting the panel detailing that can take some time...

I'll bring it along this weekend so you can see first hand...

Have you tried building your own version of a Meta Probe yet Chris ?

As I said above, Jim's kit is a beauty. The only thing I would do differently if building another would be to substitute the wooden dowel for something a little smoother - perhaps like brass or ABS with a wooden core or something...

Other than that it's a quick build...and looks good next to the 12" PE or Warp Eagles.

Now if only there was an Ultra Probe to complete the set...

Chris

Superb work there. Nice job indeed. I can imagine it took ages to detail with decals etc though.

Thanks for the tip Chris. I might try a carbon fibre tube. I've never built a Meta myself so Jim's model would be a nice distraction. It's nice to do something different for a change and something that goes together quickly for once. I might tweak things if I feel the need but essentially I'm going to build it straight out the bag.

I am suitably impressed. I can't say I ever had a clear mental image of the Meta probe until seeing this. The only image I can dig up is here in the Catacombs:

Wonderful work!

Well spotted but no. That's the 1/12th scale version (owned by Martin Willey). The one recently bought on eBay was the 1/24th scale one in scale with the 44" Eagle models and bought by our own "Ron".

Pardon the somewhat grainy pics, my good camera wasn't available tonight, so I used the "point and shoot" one.

Here's my Meta Probe, about 95% completed. Since a little work remains, not everything is glued yet, so from some angles you'll notice a little sag of the command module or engines.

Since the model lacks much detail (as did the original) I spent some time adding piping down the spine and some extra detail inside the "ladders" on the fuel tanks, to give it more of that Anderson feel to it.

And finally, to answer two pressing questions in the 1999 universe: Just how the heck were the astronauts going to land on Meta, and what was a reentry glider doing in the Alpha hangers?

I plan on adding a small propulsion module onto the glider to explain the last part of the puzzel: "so they land on Meta, then how the h*ll do they get back into orbit?"

That pic of Brian Johnson holding the Meta Probe Ship is probably the best one anyone will ever see. Prior to that, I'd seen a slightly different version in an old Starlog issue, where Johnson was holding the model in a more vertical orientation and had his hand covering most of the details aft of the four long cylindrical tanks.

As for screen caps of the ship from "Breakaway," here are a few from the Cosmos: 1999 website (plus a couple from The Catacombs):

w8cmp, great work on that model, by the way. Thanks for sharing the pics!

Hi, the Meta probe looks great. If you are bringing it to the con with the intention of putting it in the exhibition (which I`d be more than happy to do) I need to know in advance, ie today, so a space can be allocated /left for it. Chris

Hi Chris,

I hadn't necessarily intended to display it as I thought I was way too late, but if you feel it would fit in with the display I'd be more than happy to display it...

It's about 24 inches long and sits (more like balances) on a metal stand.

I'll be there at about 7.30am on Saturday and will bring it along...

I also have a Warp 12" Eagle (on elevator) and Warp 10" Hawk (on a cradle) all in scale with the Meta probe if you have room for them. Pics below...

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris, the Eagle and Hawk look superb too, but we`re pretty covered in that Dept (you`ll see what I mean when you get there) so can we just take the probe? Trust that`s ok. I`ll be setting up all day tomorrow, and will be in the model room from 9.00am Sat putting up the Sat am arrivals, before the exhibition opens at 10. Look forward to seeing you there, Chris.
