Default Saturday mornings 1976/77....an Anime classic..

Back as promised, and sorry Thundergod it isn't Tiswas... and it isn't Swap Shop.
This build is based on probably the first ever dubbed Japanese cartoon i had ever seen and i know that every male of a certain age on this forum right now will be remembering and recalling his attempts at swimming under water using nothing more than a piece of bubble gum to allow him to breath, while trying to throw a makeshift boomerang at any bad guy in the pool.....
Health and Safety would have banned this cartoon in seconds nowadays...and thats before it even got to the topless pre-teen mermaid..

Yes..... it's Marine Boy, Saturday at 9AM after Top Cat and before Swap Shop i would sit and watch this flashy, trashy poorly dubbed cartoon and hope that one day Oxy-gum would be available along with a sonic boomerang and jet propelled boots..

But back to my build and the P-1 patrol boat that was used by Ocean Patrol.
I read somewhere that wayyyy back in 1969, 4 years after the cartoon aired in japan a model kit was produced and continued to be on and off up until 1981.
It was not very screen accurate ( mainly due i think to the changing animated images of the sub ), and seemed very out of scale..
P120001.jpgPC280357.jpg
Heres the kit.... still may find one on ebay but no idea of the cost..
and here are some screen grabs showing the P1 in all its glory..
marine 1.jpgmarine 3.jpgmarine 5.jpgmarine 6.jpg

Hopefully some of you may be interested by now so i will be back soon with some posts detailing the planning and building of my own version of this childhood memory..

Regards Andy..

I remember it well , but I'd be tempted to say that it was earlier than 76/77 . Maybe it was repeated around then , but I'm pretty sure I saw it as early as 1970 , possibly even earlier . I say this because I remember having a battery powered tin-plate version of the submarine ( God , I wish I still had that ! ) and it was my favourite toy around that time . Or maybe I'm just a lot older than you Andy !
Good luck with the build , can't wait to see how it turns out .

Yes , sorry it was on early on in the 70's in an afternoon I think,
it was repeated and aired on the B.B.C on a Saturday morning in 76/77 which is when I remember it most.
Here's the Wiki link...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Boy

...and I was born in "69" a couple of years after it was made so I don't recall much before 76...
Glad you dropped by Thunder... any progress with the SW builds?? I keep looking in.

More soon...
Regards Andy

Ah.. Marine boy! Being of 66 vintage myself, I remember the show well. This must have been in 1971, because I can remember Thunderbirds, UFO and Star Trek all being must-watch TV shows.

In fact, I remember being in the school nativity around about then, which was after normal hours, so our teacher set up the school TV so that we could watch "Star Trek". This was all before video recorders so it was a monstrous ITT black-and-white set.

Marine Boy, wow, that's a blast from the past.
One thing has really bugged me for a long time though and that's the theme tune. I remember as a kid loving the theme tune and yet the two versions of the tune I can find on YouTube don't ring many bells.
This one rings no bells at all:

The start of this one rings vague bells but then it quickly goes into something I don't remember at all:

Could I ask whether anybody else remembers the theme tune and whether either of these links is the one you remember, or is it just my old memory playing up again?
Cheers

Well it seems I've a couple ( or 3) years on you Andy , me being the same vintage as Steve ! and yes , Dougal and Steve , the second clip/theme tune is the one I remember . Talk about nostalgia , that clip literally brought a tear to my eye !
As for the Star Wars builds Andy , the fighter's finished ( just working on some kind of base ) and the Cruiser's awaiting repair/finishing after a little accident caused a bit of damage , nothing serious , but I'm waiting to replenish my styrene stock . I've another build in the planning stages as well , which'll be right up your street .

I'm a 64 vintage so I guess the second clip is the one then and it is my memory that's playing up!
Thanks SteveDix and Thundergod, that's much appreciated

As far as theme tunes go I think Marine Boy's changed depending on the year the episode was being made.( Wiki lists a couple of variations to the cartoon )
Also the ending and credits were usually just the music with no singing as these clips ...

and fast forward to the end credits for the instrumental...

show.

Dougal, I personally remember both theme tunes in a mixed up way, the "you tube" video links above having the most remembered for me.
Thanks for all the personal memories.

I would go with both versions from memory and the mention of Gigantor sets the nostalgia meter off the scale - its a theme I remember as well

The first clip was certainly the opening theme broadcast here in Australia in the early 70's. I was even able to sing along, even though I haven't seen an episode for 35+ years. I'm still bitterly dissapointed that OxyGum isn't a real thing.

Went trawling YouTube and relived Sat mornings with Champion the Wonder horse, Guy Williams Zorro, Banana Splits, Aeronaughts, Whirlybirds, Casey Jones and Flashing Blade - those were the days!! - never mind the school holidays with Robinson Crusoe White Horses and Bell & Sebastian (god I feel old)

I loved the music in Robinson Crusoe, in fact I am sure I saw the soundtrack album available on iTunes, wish I'd bought it, perhaps I'll look to see if it is still there.

Nostalgia is alive and well...

Update, still available at 5.99
