Default Liberator Teleport Bracelet (scratch build)

Evening all, had a go at a bracelet, using EMA tubing as in the original, and also the Horizon manual.
First cut up the tube into strips.

Then sanded the edges down.

When both rings were nice and smooth they were cut up using a mitre box and a small craft saw.

Next was to cut a bit out for the hinge.
I held the two parts together with tape so they stayed in line.

Hinge glued on with 2 part glue, and then the larger ring parts super glued on.

Hung outside whilst applied 3 coats of plastic primer.

After the primer allowed to dry over night.

And next day time to paint, using the same colour as the blasters.

Applied 4 coats to make sure it covered everywhere.

Left to dry overnight and then the trim, gold strips and button, which Martin once said was orange perspex not pink, as the studio lighting in the 70's made it look pink.
Got it from the same place as the original, and just had to cut it to size.
It did look a bit orange, so before I stuck it to the silver tape I stuck a bit of red insulating tape to the bottom of it, which makes it reflect quite well I think.

And with the added foam strip inside.

And the finished bracelet...only took me 3 days....

Hope you like it...

Very good

But it brought back a terrible memory from my childhood. That was when Blue Peter (UK Children's programme) showed us how to make a Blake's Seven bracelet out of an old orange squash bottle and a toilet roll - never has there been a more frustrating project ending in a temper tantrum! v

Absolutely fantastic build! I've wanted one of these since the show aired all those years ago!

So anyway, I realise this is an old post, but i've just bought the 'Century Castings' bracelet DIY pack, and was curious about a couple of things.

a) Assuming I use the same painting methods as you, how sturdy is the finish? I'm thinking both around the hinge area, and also where the two ends of the bracelet meet together when you close it, specifically the piece that slides inbetween the other to 'lock' it with what seems to be friction. Does the paint endure moderate useage?

b) Does this friction remain with moderate use or did you find it loosens and falls open after a while? If so, how did you resolve that?

c) For the brown paint, I was going to use 'Halfords Vauxhall Hazel Brown Car Spray Paint 300ml', would that be the correct one?

Many thanks for your help

The colour is right, the problem with resin is that it can be brittle, the ema tubing of the original ones is tough plastic so can take being opened and closed as it works on friction, the paint finish is quite tough if you get the clasp friction right by sanding it down inside to take into account of the thickness of the layers of paint.
The hinge on the original ones were screwed and glued and then filed flush with the outside as the outer band covers up the part (but also I noticed the hinge on the originals is only fitted in a cut out on one side, the other side of the tube is not cut.
Just don't let BRIAN BLESSED have a look at it when it is finished as he has a habit of crushing them....

His voice alone would probably crush it!

Joking aside I really can't wait to build this model! It's truly one of the most iconic sci-fi devices from my childhood!

Funny story, when I met BRIAN last year, he said 'YOU WILL HAVE TO SHOUT, I AM GOING DEAF' so we stood there shouting at each other....

Bah, just bought a bracelet DIY kit online and i've got to be honest, it's not that great. The bracelet parts themselves seem to be quite brittle and will need a fair bit of sanding and filling around the edges. Even the orange perspex piece will need sanding and polishing

I was wondering, does anyone have the EMA tubing dimensions to hand so that I can source my own? Or better still, does some kind soul here have any pre-cut pieces left over from previous builds who might sell them to me

Looking at this build thread it takes me back to when I attempted the Blue Peter version of this & the poster who said it ended in a temper tantrum got it so right.

I must have a go at one of these one day. Another thing to add to the list.
