Default Communicator

I am having a go at scratchbuilding a communicator. This is actually quite hard to do. I have carved a shape out of balsa and used it to heat form some sheets of Kydex (Haircell texture) over. I don't have a vac-former, but I managed by clamping the plastic sheet in a frame, heating it up and forcing it over the wooden former.

I made some brass discs which will be the hinge and cut out and shaped an aluminium plate for the centre line trim. Long way to go.

Thank you. I have glued these parts together and added a velcro piece on the back. Not all of the original props had screws on the back apparently so I'm not going to put them on mine. They strike me as anachronistic, but then probably velcro would be too.

I have made the indicator lights by sticking on little glass jewels from a craft shop. The moire pattern display is a photocopy with transpaseal on it. The bezel was a bit of tube I had lying around that was the right diameter.

I have made the control panel from a piece of aluminium sheet. The speaker grille is made from gold foil tape, pierced with a knife, and car body repair mesh. The two knobs are not accurate (the originals were slot car wheels), I have used lock nuts but they give the right effect.

I made the lid/antenna from some perforated aluminium sheet (couldn't get brass), glued to a frame made from a brass tube. I sprayed it gold.

Anyway, all done.
