Default Building an UP body for the SAW UP CM

I always wanted an Ultra Probe in scale with my personally detailed AMT Ertl Eagles. I started with the command module that I obtained from Small Art Works.

The body starts with some simple tubing...

The tricky part is the forward cone due to the odd shape--it is an oval in the front to mate with the rear of the CM.

I decided to build one from scratch using strips of styrene covered with putty.

The completed cone was then molded so it could be cast as a single resin part for strength. The SAW CM mounts to it using four brass pins.

I decided that it would be fun to hang this model over my work bench using a mock-up of a docking arm of the Dragon Ship.

I built this part "on-the-cheap" using press board and a cardboard tube. By applying a coat of matte varnish the resulting surface can be painted.

For detailing, I applied a gray wash and shade painting on the tubes.

Default That's beautiful....

.....people will be fed up with me going on about the Ultra Probe (it's truly iconic), but this model is up there with the best. I love the clever idea you had to display her as well. This is a really stunning example of a much-loved classic, and you should be very very pleased with the outcome.

Beautiful.

Kindest regards

Patrick
