Default R.I.P. COMET MINIATURES :-(

I have just learnt that "The greatest shop ever (for Sci-fi/Anderson Fans) Has closed it's doors for the last time. There has been no official notice that I am currently aware of and despite whatever folks may feel personally of Mr Tony James, the man introduced me to a world of wonder 25+ years ago and I have spent many a penny on my childhood dreams and heroes in that store, I for one will sorely miss it and regret I did not visit in recent years, and now, sadly it's too late.
he website says it is suspended though it does appear Comet will continue trading online, though great news ,a poor substitute for simply standing outside hat store and gazing for ages a that fabulous window display and painted montage.

Good luck Tony & Co in moving forward, thanks for everything

I visited Comet earlier this year when they were still in bussiness. At that time part of the shop was already closed. I will surely miss my visits to that great shop.

Hope they will continue to exist as an online shop, I still need to buy some stuff from them.

Sad news.

Thanks Tony for the happy memories and the many kits and toys I bought from there over the years. As Knight1966 says, just looking in the shop window was awe inspiring.

Thought his plastic kits such as the Dalek and Liberator were over complicated and pretty poor but it's a shame to hear the shop's closing.

Wondered why their site was down.

Been to the store only once and the prices where expensive very. But can't get to annoyed think that's why Modelzone died to overpriced by the Internet standards. Now where to buy stuff few Model train stores open for odds and sods. So much for the future of model making real shame known a few guys lately my age 46. They have been getting nostalgic and looking for models kits to capture their youth but now what. Hope the web site is back up and running soon. Oh and did a deal with him about 15 years ago and got totally ripped off forgot all about that.

Yeah, he pulled that one on me too, but it's still a shame that another great Anderson/sci-fi kit specialist has gone, never got to visit in person, kept planning to, but never got around to it

Sorry to hear the shop has closed, had a couple of great visits there in my forays across the pond, and always fond of Tony. Prices were indeed high, but so is rent, even in Clapham Junction.

Haven't visited for a long time, but the shop was a fun visit when Tony wasn't there.

Guess you weren't a fan of Tony's then?

I didn't have direct experience with him, but witnessed him bullying staff and big noting himself on several occasions. He didn't seem like a very pleasant guy to me.

I've only dealt with him on the phone and that was a good 15 years ago at least. I used to buy stuff from him but his postage costs were sky high and lately so have the model prices been.

I think it's just the state of the economy - garage kits are something of a luxury, and science fiction kits are a niche within that luxury. Model shops that cater for all tastes I suppose have a better chance of survival.
My local, Jamieson's Models, appear to be okay, always attending shows, decent prices and accessories - very few SF kits, though... and none of them are garage kits.

I thought his Liberator was too small, really, while the Daleks were okay... but needed work to get something decent out of them. I hope Comet can keep trading as an online business as I know he sells a lot of UNCL kits which I've never seen advertised anywhere else.

My Mrs was very miffed when the PE Supercar and Fireball came out, because they were exact copies of CM limited editions she bought for me at 150 a go a short while earlier! CM sold the masters?

I only spoke with him on the phone but I can imagine he was a bit of a nightmare to be around sometimes. And he'd always over sell things so they sounded much better than they were.

I used to be one of his best customers when I used to order from him
during the 1990's and at the dawn of the New Millenium. But since they
started to change their policies to not to accept IPMOs any longer and
using computers to handle their orders,it just wasn't the very same
any more.

I had known Tony and his shop since the 1980`s when I stayed near London with the forces, I always found him very helpful and friendly, at times his prices were a bit steep, but guys this was a retail shop in London, the guy had overheads.
if it had not been for him, and David Nightingale up in Blackpool there would not be so many Modellers as there are to day (Sci Fi ones that is)
I am sure I will see Tony again at Telford IPMS in the future, all the best Tony

P.S. this was the same guy who took out a 3 -4 page in model mart every month to let you know what was coming out in the future, and was let down so many times with garage suppliers promising the earth and failing to deliver, I am sure his phone bill must have been sky high chasing up stuff for his customers

I'm not into resin I admit but some of the resin kits I bought from him years ago [ before I stopped buying resin ] were downright awful.
