Jumping back from the other thread......

They never really stated what Taylor's mission was. The only thing we do know is what Taylor stated in his log at the beginning of POTA, that they just completed their mission which took 6 months (their time) and he was turning the ship around to return to Earth. That was it.

Now I was thinking about this a few years ago and the so-called 'space-warp' that was mentioned in Escape (and maybe in Beneath) doesn't make much sense to me any more. In Beneath, Brent stated that he and Skipper followed Taylor's trajectory hoping to wind up where Taylor went (and they did). In Escape, the Ape-onauts followed Taylor's trajectory in reverse and the space-warp took them back to 1973.

I didn't really think about it and the space-warp thing sort-of made sense. A few years ago, I rewatched the beginning of POTA and the space-warp doesn't make any sense to me anymore. Taylor's ship went out on a 6 month mission their time which was the equivalent of 700 years back on Earth due to the time dilation effect. Turning the ship around and returning to Earth would take another 6 months of their time or another 700 years back on Earth. That's 1,400 Earth time years. After the ship crashed, Taylor looked at the ship's clock which read 3978 which is about 2,000 years after the ship was launched. Subtract the 1,400 years leaves only 600 years. So, if this space-warp existed, all it did was push the ship 600 years further out into the future not all of the 2,000 years as movies were trying to make us believe. Which makes the return trip in Escape now impossible for me to believe could happened.

The other dent is in POTA, Taylor states the ship's clock reads 3978 - which could be beyond that because that is when the clock stop working. This also explains the clock discrepancy in Beneath, since Brent states their ship's clock read 3954 before it stopped and Beneath took place (months????) after POTA. I can buy Beneath, that the second ship got there but now I can't buy Escape, that the ship returned back into the past. It looks to me to be a one way trip.

Unless it wasn't a space warp at all but a worm hole. Landon also asks if the local star is Bellatrix. So were they heading for Orion or not?

In the original book, the ship was heading to Betelgeuse, which is in the same constellation of Bellatrix...Orion. From what I could remember, the time warp or worm hole was an unplanned event when the ship was travelling close to the speed of light.

In Escape, I don't think Milo knew how to fly the spacecraft. It flew on a predetermined course programmed in the flight computer.

Chock it up to having too many screenwriters for the film series!

But that's my two cents
